I'm interested in moving to Montevideo but need to know some things. Are things generally very regulated or not? I'm in Paraguay right now and everything is pretty loose. Do the police stop traffic and ask to see everyones documents (to catch illegals). Here they do which is the one thing they aren't loose about. What are the residency requirements? Do they have that Buenos Aires accent? (which I find a little difficult to understand). thanks

Uruguay in general is like a smaller version of Argentina Inspite of the Uruguayan rival attitude towards their larger neighbour but things here are verrymutcu looser than in Paraguay

But have you dealt with immigration? If this is looser than Paraguay, I am sure glad I didn´t pick there to live! But my question for you is, do they follow through on the consequences of overstaying a visa, or missing the deadline for producing certain documentation, or leaving the country briefly while in the midst of residency paperwork (which you are only supposed to do with permission of the ministerio)? Thanks for any insight, as I try to wade through all the residency rules. Elena

01-01-2008 Hi, benvenutob- Just re- read your post on Uruguay. Returned to USA 05 Dec 2007 from ex- ploratory self-retirement research visit to Uruguay. As the Southwick's sched- ule in Atlantida was too busy, unable meet with them for info chat about Uruguay. Roger South- wick & wife, Donna, been living Atlantida since '05 & say like very much. Why u like Uruguay & prefer live Atlantida as opposed to elsewhere in Uruguay? Thank you for reply.
Cheers, Beacon

I've never seen the police ask anyone for papers. I've never seen the police pull someone over for a traffic violation in Montevideo. I have seen on rare occasion the police have a checkpoint in Montevideo to check the papers of people's CARS. A taxi I was in blew them off.
Residency is easy you need to show US$500 of income and the usual id, police report etc, and wait a long time.
