Hello. I am in the process of traveling to Uruguay. I was born in Montevideo but left at a young age and now I reside in United States, Florida. My daughter is 13 years old and unfortunately, she does not speak Spanish. I have family there and wish to stay for awhile but I am worried that my daughter might not like it, especially because we are going in July. Is winter there that bad? Where are the places that my daughter and I can visit so she won't be bored? Are there any Americans kids living there? Any information that you can provide me it would be very helpful. Thank you.

Dear Sonia, I have just moved to Montevideo with my daughter and we love it. The not speaking Spanish part is tough, but we are learning. If you are here and want some tips on fun things to do and places to meet other Americans feel free to e-mail me at elena21valentine@yahoo.com Elena

Hi Beacon,
I am sorry I did not respond immediately. I returned to the US for the holidays and have not been visiting this site. I hope you located the group who meets through David Fizner, the gentleman who has the uruguayliving blog. Another good contact is Jennifer Sprigings who works for LARM (you can google it, I don't have the address any more). She works for a re-location company, and I know you said you were doing self research, but it is always good to get local insight which you might not be able to figure out yourself. Another good way to meet ex-pats and get good advice is through the American Women's Club. Again, just google American Womens Club Montevideo to get in touch with them. I will be back mid-January and if you need more guidance let me know through the new 'expat connect' feature on this web site.
Good luck! I like Uruguay very much and think you would enjoy retiring there.
Valentine

30 Dec 07 Hola, Elena- Thank you for your emails. Just read your reply while was visiting Montevideo. Enjoyed delicious Thanks- giving dinner at www. uruguayliving.com office/ house in Buceo across from the Rambla. Met lots of very nice expats & Ur- uguayans. Also, shared a tasty lunch /chat with several expats/Uruguayans /man from Turkey at the OLD MAZ restaurant in Pocitos 1-4 every Sunday. I can Amtrak from San Jose, CA to LA Union Sta- tion 7/8 Jan(about 8-9 hrs if on time) but, not 31 Dec or 01 Jan. What is your return date to Monte- video? Really enjoyed Uruguay, what saw of it.. Want return sometime 2008 for more in-depth visit. Think Roberto & his 2 friends may also be interested. What's a dirt cheap airfare on what air- line? I flew Taca-Lacsa from Los Angeles to Costa Rica to Guayaquil, Ecuador. Bused from Guayaquil to Montevideo via Peru/Chili/ Argentina to Montevideo & back again 6 weeks later. That was a very in- teresting experience! Waiting for your reply, Elena.
Cheers, Katy
