Best way to meet others on an exploratory trip

My parnter and I are traveling to Uruguay in November or December to explore it as a possible winter retirement haven. What is the best way to network with others? We will only be there for a week or two initially--just to get an initial feel. What is important for me about considering a new country to retire in part time is to discover community. My partner and I are gay but that is not are primary identity. Our relationships are built upon people we love and relate to--whether gay or straight. However, I must admit part of our attraction to Uruguay is not only the European like lifestyle but the embracing of diversity and tolerance--or so I hear.

Hi there, your own values seem noble in terms of tolerance and relating to others. However, while you may have heard about a tolerant attitude in Uruguay, this should not be confused with basic manners.

I'ill be straightforward with you, and I hope you will take it well. Rarely will a uruguayan be rude to you in your face, but rest assured that uruguayan society has very conservative values that are highly resistant to change, in its own full right and for good reasons proper to the history of the country.

And while keeping a calm, discreet and educated exterior, under the breath and among locals, everything is very quick to be judged and seen according to those values. Yes, the occasional case of homosexuality that appeared in a family or a neighbourhood may be embraced affectionately because in the end, it's one of the family or clan, but no delusions to be made, expats bringing in such a different lifestyle will not be accepted in the same way.

If you want to live in a society that is truly tolerant locally of that lifestyle, the only places I know of are San Francisco, Hollywood, New York and some parts of Southern Greece. There may be more that I have not seen, but I've lived and spoken to locals in many different cultures and languages about this and similar topics. The majority of other places perceive these as alien communities imposed on the local society and are looked upon with increasing disdain and sense of invasion to traditional values, which is precisely what forms cultural diversity.

May be good for vacation once or twice, but in the long run, may be wearying and lonely to actually live there.

Also, don't take the December / January months as representative of the country the whole year round. It comes alive in those months with lots of activity and sunshine, but can go quite grey and cold in both departments the rest of the year. Winters can be very cold and harsh, and climate change has been changing the seasons quite a bit making many summers unusually cold as well, year after year.

In your shoes and with these considerations, I wouldn't bank on this as The place.

Good luck and have a nice summer!

I would like to like to say that your answer was very clear and my experience here, as an expat, is that you are right on target.

I just wanted to add my polite support and affirmation to your answer.

And I would like to suggest that first connecting to the gay community in the country you wish to move to would be a good way to discover the level of tolerance and inclusion in society. If it is the Latin culture you love, I might suggest Buenas Aires or Mexico City, even Santiago has a little more diversity and tolerance.

Good luck,
Elena
