As in most Spanish speaking countries the movies are in the original language and subtitled in Spanish, except for the big blockbusers or kids movies (kids can´t read that fast)

And of course there are TV stations in English. When you picked UY you picked the most sophistocated of the Latin American countries, the safest, and the one with the least corrupt government...safe banking, I could go on and on. When you live here, you notice more the consequences of a socialist government (strikes and slow government workers) than anything which might deserve the title ´third world´.

I have done a lot of research on retiring to a foreign country and UY is the one that seems to have the most going for it. I have not been able to find anything negative at all.

I can't help being curious about your situation. How did you come to live in UY? Do you work? Do you have family there? Is this your permanent home?

Hi,

I was thinking about you as I rode the bus this morning to take my daughter to school. Let me answer your question then I´ll tell you what I was thinking about.

I wanted to raise my daughter to be bi-cultural and I have an affinity for Latin cultures. I picked the cleanest, safest, most sophistocated country in Latin America. Kids don´t get kidnapped here, you can drink the water and most big theatre productions and performers stop here on their tours because we are between BA and Brazil. Education and activities for kids are eqivalent to the US, and, though robberies and muggings are rampant, there are few violent crimes.

Now to what I was thinking about you this morning. I did not pick the cheapest place to live. If your priority is to find a cheap country where your American dollar can go the farthest, this is not it.

You need to move here because you like it, not because you think you can have a higher standard of living on the same US dollar. You can in many cases, but in other cases things are more expensive. The reason I was thinking of you while on the bus, which costs less than a dollar, is because when I miss the bus or am running late I take a taxi which is over US$ 5. You need to be able to do that or you will be constantly frustrated and focusing on money and you will not enjoy your life here.

Do you object to working while you are here? There are many opportunities to teach English, and when your Spanish gets better you can even do extra work on the movies and commercials shot here. (many commercials for Mexico are made here)

In conclusion, if your focus is a cheap place to live, UY is not for you. If your focus is a high standard of living in a Latin country, this is a good choice.
