Hello adventurers,
This is an FYI to Kimbo and others who are trying to join Uruguay. I'm arranging my container to ship to Uruguay. So far, these are my details:
ICONTAINERS (LUIS) (305)-964-8731 SERVICE SUMMARY PORT OF LOAD NEW YORK PORT OF DESTINATION MONTEVIDEO TRANSHIPMENT PORT - CONTAINERS 1 x 40 Foot High Cube INSURANCE Yes ETD 08/16/2015 INCOTERM CIF EST TRANSIT TIME 26 days PRICE BREAKDOWN FREIGHT $1,177.00 COMMUNICATION FEE $10.00 SED (SHIPPING EXPORT DECLARATION) $65.00 B/L COURIER $35.00 TRUCKING $1,110.44 CHASSIS RENTAL $56.00 INSURANCE $75.00 BL US DOC FEE $65.00 TOTAL $2,593.44
The container shows up and they give you 2 hours to load. Any time over 2 hours is billed at $100 per hour. They expect the bill of lading (inventory) to be complete one day earlier.
Peace.

Thank you for the VERY helpful info. Any US customs assault as reported here previously?

Hi Kimbo,
I must have missed that one… Can you elaborate?
There were more fees. It ended up being $2733 so far. This gets the box off the boat and places it near customs in Uruguay. There will be more expenses on that side I'm sure: Customs, trucking, so on and so on. I'll try to keep posting as I learn.
Peace

Shipping a container goes like this:
Load at your house Take it to (most likely) a rail yard by truck Train takes it to a port Off-loaded from the train and loaded onto the ship Shipped here where it's off loaded and held hostage until you pay Someone drives it to your house Someone unloads it here.
Each one of these steps has to be paid. It also doesn't include things like insurance, fees or taxes on either side of the ocean, container rental, fuel and weight surcharges, and I'm sure many other things I'm forgetting.
Basically, you're going to end up paying about $15,000 to get a 40 foot high cube here. There's no way around it. You might be able to save some money by moving things along yourself. But believe me, you'll earn it.

Sure, type "40 ft" in the search window and take a look at the posting that comes up by Wanderlustspirit on 6/30/2015 titled "40 foot containers -charged for extra weight"
In there you will see many items on this topic of US customs and also details of the cost Crazyfarmer has given you here. Here is a copy of a post by letsmove on the topic who also lost some furniture:
letsmove View Profile Send Private Message Invite into Your Network 6/23/2015 05:38 0 0 abuse reply to this message reply My international shipper sent a local moving company to my house. They made a visual inspection and declared the approx. weight. However, they were short but the international mover did contact me immediately and told me the weight was more and therefore, I would have to pay for the extra weight but that was up front before the container was shipped. I did pay more with the UY movers because I was outside their delivery area. But I knew all this up front. The only surprise was US customs ransacking my container and removing about 1/4 of my stuff. Charging me $2005 to have me pay for the privilege or they would refuse to send my container onward.

Did you look into the bond you will have to deal with this end as well?
You either put up the duty due on your stuff until you get your permanent residency or you buy some form of insurance to cover that cost. Ours was $12,000 US on a 20 foot container. It was based more on volume and weight than value and was decided for us.
Also your packing list needs to be in Spanish.
