I am a retiree living in Vancouver and have had my eye on Uruguay for something different.
Montevideo or Colonia seems right place mainly because of cheap “golf and performing arts (Teatro Solis) ” with proximity to Buenos Aires.
I know a man with two kids living in Prado, Montevideo. He finds the neighborhood safe and cheap.
Initially he settled in area of Punta Carretas, where he had difficulty finding space in public middle school for his two kids. So he decided to move to Prado and finds the quality of education more than satisfactory (he believes in degree of freedom for kids).
He plays the golf course in Cerro with cheap yearly membership, but finds no issue in taking the bus to the golf course, not as bad as he thought.
He plays the fancy golf course in Punta Carretas, which is open to public on Mondays for free and a few regular rounds of golf at deep discount there as the privilege for the members of Cerro golf course.
I researched some info on golfing in Uruguay ca. 2014 as follows: Punta Del Este 1. La Barra Golf Club - Winter Season membership March / Nov USD 500 TOTAL 2. Club Del Lago - Winter Season membership March / Nov USD 1500 TOTAL 3. Cantegrill - 200 USD per month (one year contract)
Colonia: 4. Colonia del Sacramento (golf and spa) Membresías Individual Membresía Anual Adelantada (Enero 10 % de descuento) U$S 1915.- Membresía Anual U$S 2129.- Membresía Semestral U$S 1144.- Membresía Trimestral U$S 705.- Membresía Mensual U$S 320.-
Membresía Adicional Matrimonio Membresía Anual Adelantada (Enero 10 % de descuento) U$S 939.- Membresía Anual U$S 1043.- Membresía Semestral U$S 561.- Membresía Trimestral U$S 345.- Membresía Mensual U$S 157.-
Membresías Menor de 18 años Membresía Anual Adelantada (Enero 10 % de descuento) U$S 498.- Membresía Anual U$S 554.- Membresía Semestral U$S 298.- Membresía Trimestral U$S 183.- Membresía Mensual U$S 83.-

I wanted to share info I have on golfing in Uruguay and was hoping to get more info others might have on the recreational activities like golfing and the events of performing arts, especially in Teatro Solis or Colon and such. A thread for discussion on the topic would be helpful for the people like me.

Yes, I read it. Thank you for the info.
Do you have any info on the golf course in the gated community in Tahona? I heard that the golf course there is pretty good. Any info on the properties and the membership there in Tahona?
The same guy I mentioned above plays the course in Tahona every once in a while, but he still can’t answer the questions I am asking. Perhaps that’s because his Spanish sucks.
The guy mentioned living in Prado is paying the rent in Pesos, but I noticed that the rent and the sale price of the houses online are all advertised in US dollars.
I had sent out emails to a lot of golf courses in Uruguay, Chile, Costa Rica, and Colombia, but I received only one reply. That is from Sheraton Colonia Golf, which is attractive in offering spa and short membership plan.
I heard that the golf course there is almost empty and pretty much so is other golf courses as well.
The golf course in Punta Carretas is one of the finest in Latin America, which opens to the public on Mondays to offer free round of golf as a part of the agreement with the city.
What a concept! What a country!
That said, I was told that there aren’t many golfers who take advantage of free round of golf at the upscale golf course. That threw me off completely.
There aren’t many golfers on the golf course in Cerro either, which is also a fine course with nice ocean view with low membership. The golf course now has much improved putting greens thanks to the new management of late from Brasil or something.
Doug Casey seems right about Argentina (or Uruguay) in saying to the effect that the old European tradition can be found only in Argentina, which is long gone in Europe. I guess the culture is what I am after.

Wally has a post about the Montevideo course.

He and his wife are returning to the US after a number of years but there is a lot of useful info in his blog.

Focus & afj21 Thanks for thw private messages
I do and need to play golf daily as therapy for illness. That's the constraint in determining the area to live in.
I plan to stay in Uruguay for about four months to avoid the wet season here in Vancouver.
I wonder how much the property taxes and the monthly strata fees are like for a small apartment in the vicinity of Prado or others close enough to the golf courses in Cerro or Tahona.
