I viewed some ads on Mercado Libre and I have seen some super-expensive prices for average cars. Also, the price is listed in U $ S. What does U $ S mean?

Thank you Carlito.

How much does a new VW beetle (local) cost in USD? Range, of course. If you know other car prices as a general idea, I'd be grateful. I have called a dealer in Montevideo for a quote in USD for a 2016 Accord, the dude told me $75,000. I found that insane. I may be wrong, but.., still, that's the price for a Porsche 911!!

Have a look here

http://www.gallito.com.uy/autos
under todos los vehiculos pick autos then under todas las marcas pick VW
then Buscar to see all the new and used VW's listed today.
New will say 0Km to show it has not been driven.
We bought a VW Fox a few years ago and the price of a new one is still about the same -around $21,000 US
Don't forget that here the sales tax is already included in the price. You rarely can get a lower price - we got some floor mats thrown in but not a lower price.
Also, most cars do not have daylight running lights but you need to have them on when you drive. We had the dealer fix ours so they go on and off automatically when you start the car as up north.

Thank you, Morell. Nice information. Cars are expensive in UY, clearly. A new Golf goes for 33K.
Now, question #2: what do you pay for insurance, what kind of money? I pay here in NJ (where it's pricey as compared to the rest of the country), about 1100/year for a 2011 Accord, with 500 deductible, full coverage. If I sound confused, I'm sure that's not something new in this forum.
#3: Any other additional costs, such as who knows what?!

We recently renewed our Insurance with Porto Seguro and we have paid for two years up front and get three years coverage.
Prior to that we paid for just one year at a time.
When we bought the car, the dealer emailed us quotes from three different companies with slightly different deductibles and costs.

Our current cost works out to 1087.61 pesos per month ( $36.50 US per month) we have a $500 US deductible.
We also pay a car license fee of 14,855 pesos per year. ( $499.00 US )

Thank you , M, very valuable info. $438/yr sounds beautiful, but what's up with the 500 fee? What does it give you, or is it just a fee?

It is just a fee - a vehicle registration fee.

I see. Differences, good and bad. This registration fee is about 10 times higher than I expected, however, I see a lot of advantages in UY.

Bert,
Yes it sounds good compared to costs in the US but
before you make any decisions remember insurance cost means NOTHING unless you also get what type of coverage is included as well as the maximum amount of each and also the car type and make. For example I pay $1500 a yr for a BMW convertible ($50,000 car) and I have the following coverage and limits:
Personal Injury protection $5K ea person, aggregate medical expenses including income loss $10K ea. person, collision $500 deductible, comprehensive $250 deductible, bodily injury $250K ea. person $500K ea. occurrence, property damage $100K ea. occurrence, rental reimbursement, uninsured motorist for bodily injury $100K ea. person $300K ea. accident and these are the minimums I must have in order to qualify for a 1 Million personal liability insurance. I only pay $32 yearly for car registration (plates).
Now having said this I have an employee that Pays only $300 a year but only has the minimum required personal injury protection of $5K and no collision, bodily injury, uninsured motorist or property damage. So as you can see you can't compare your cost to others unless you have the identical car and the same coverage type and limits.
