Hello all!
We are coming to Montevideo from Boquete, Panama. September 10th staying in the Heritage Quarter.
How much is the taxi from the airport?
How is the weather in September?
Suggested restaurants that are not touristy?
Off the beaten path places to explore?
Local shopping?

Thank you!
John & Susan

In September you won't find much touristy open. Tourists are usually only here from mid December to February.

Weather? We arrived here September 22nd in 2011 and it was quite nippy. We needed heat in our house in the evenings and we could see our breath in the early a,m,
It warmed up during the day and a sweatshirt and jeans was fine.
You may get a bit warmer weather though. The beaches will be empty, no one in the water but a walk on the beach will be OK.

The only touristy restaurants in my view are the ones in the port area

http://www.welcomeuruguay.com/montevideo/port-market.html but even these are fun to visit especially if you eat meat.

We have enjoyed La Petite Cuisine - very small but good food, Es Mercat - seafood and Restaurante Tandori - sort of Asian fusion. All in Montevideo.

Everywhere will be off the beaten path in my view in September. Colonia, Punta del Diablo and Cabo Polonia are worth a visit depending on how long you are staying and how far you want to go, but many of the hotels etc in those areas may not be open and I don't know if the dune buggies will be running to Cabo Polonia then. There are no roads.

Shopping - nothing much worth buying here unless you want mate tea, dulce de leche or things made from cow horns. Maybe someone else has ideas???

Hi Morell,
Thank you very much.
Maybe we can meet for a glass of wine /coffee when we arrive?
If you are ever in Panama we can fill you in on this great country.

Cheers,
John & Susan

Hi, regular taxis are not allowed to pickup in the airport so only the expensive ones are. Depending on the hours you arrive and the amount of luggage you have the bus is safe and cheap.

We are flying in at 1 am.
Sounds like our best bet is a taxi. What fare should we expect?

Thanks,

taxis from the airport are if I recall a flat $42 USD and you get a coupon at a booth in the arrivals lobby... credit cards accepted.

By far the best place is http://www.mam.com.uy/
You can get a $7 taxi from t. . he centro or it is a nice 45 minute walk down a very busy street. I usually walk there and bus back, You can bus both ways. Mercado Agricola Montevideo is the name, restored 17th? century market, you will be major impressed. The Abillero Cocina
is my favorite, buffet style restaurant where you pay by the weight of your meal, super good

Where in Uruguay will you be visiting/staying? I have a house that will become available in July, it is in Pinares Maldonado.
My long term tenants are leaving in July. If you are planning on staying 3 months I would recommend seeing different
towns. Maldonado is about 1 1/2 hour by tour bus from Montevideo. It was the first capital of Uruguay and is much smaller,
close to the ocean (Montevideo is on the river that ends in Punta del Este, about 1 mile from Maldonado.
If you would like more pics let me know. My place is in perfect condition. There is a local bus stop about 10 houses away.

Is a special taxi only used at an airpot and how much does it cost? We want to go to the city but don't have a lot of money to spend.
Thanks
Pete
