On a number of posts on this and other fora, I hear that a benefit of big apartment building is being able to come and go anonymously. What is the benefit of this? Is it security related, and if so how?

Privacy would certainly be a reason. If you have ever had a nosey neighbor you would certainly appreciate this. I've lived with such a neighbor years ago and can tell you it is very unsettling to have your every move monitored. Some people, of course, don't see any need for privacy.

A potential intruder not knowing for sure whether someone is at home or not is a BIG security plus for you, whereas knowing for sure someone is NOT at home is a big security risk.
