cell phones....do I purchase a cell phone here or when I get to Montevideo? If I purchase one in the US, what do I want to get?

You could find a fairly inexpensive ordinary cell phone in Uruguay.
But smart phones can be quite expensive (about twice the price you might pay in the USA). I would suggest you purchase one before you depart and bring it with you.

The kind of phone you need is one which is an UNLOCKED GSM phone. FYI there are two technology standards in cell phones available in the USA and they are CDMA and GSM -- they are completely incompatible with each other. ONLY GSM will work in Uruguay. Make sure your phone is GSM and is UNLOCKED.

If you do a search on Amazon for "unlocked gsm phone" you will get an idea of what is available and the costs.

When you get here just purchase a pre-paid sim card (that slips into your phone) and you are in business. You will want to be sure to ask for one that includes data, that way you will also have internet access. The cost for a pre-paid sim card is nominal (only a few dollars) and you can charge it with as much money as you want and conveniently recharge it as often as you like.

Then... Make a point of looking for where you register the phone so you can get a monthly contract and not need to be recharged with more minutes and data frequently. About 600 pesos/month.

Whatsinaname, YES that is exactly what I did. Then, I came here and went to Antel and got " prepago" service, only because I am visiting for 3 weeks. Antel was great. I actually found Ebay better for unlocked Iphones. Hope this may assist others.
