Hello all, I am a us citizen wanting to explore options out there for the future,
I am a Floridian, bilingual English/Spanish and love sunny weather, like so, I was researching Uruguay as a possible destination for living. I am a us licensed physician so I was looking for working there as a doctor and all that. There is information about how dirty the streets and beaches are there, how expensive is everything and how bad the school system is.
Could I ask for you living there, what is the real truth about it?
Thank you,

We haven't had much sun for weeks it seems recently. Just a lot of cool temperatures, wind and rain. We have had our wood stove going now since May and just got more wood as it seems we will need it for a few more weeks.

You would need to check if you can work here, I know an RN who is from here but trained in Australia and Uruguay would not recognize her qualifications and she went back to Australia.
Yes it is probably no cheaper than Florida to live. and you would probably be paid much less. There are good private schools here for several hundred dollars per month. The public system might not be what you would want. Here in Atlantida the kids only attend for four hours a day and there are frequent strikes and days off.
I find Montevideo dirty and crowded and go there as little as possible. Others like it. There are other smaller towns but they have little in the way of amenities.

For example, Atlantida has only a handful of restaurants - all serving pretty much the same menu, no movie theatre, no hospital, not much for kids to do that I know of.
The beach is fine although deserted this time of year except for a few hardy fishermen and a few folk with their dogs.

We like the pace of life as we are retired and get pensions from abroad. Local pensioners don't get much it seems to live on.

I don't know about the Medical system in Colombia but have a friend schooled in Colombia working in NYC. She had to go through the US medical system process to be licensed in the US but Medellin Colombia is the best country I've been to in S America. I stay for 6 months a year as that is the max on a tourist Visa. I will be there in 4 weeks and can not say enough, 1st classs restaurants from Thai, Peruvian, Italian. Everyone, more or less, are very patient and always smiling. If you have never been go to Laureles Medellin. I hope to retire there.
