Hi everyone!

My wife and our kids (3 and 9mths when we arrive) are taking an extended holiday to visit Uruguay in Jan 2017.

Please can you recommend areas we should stay/websites to book accomodation? Ideally we would like to be near the beach somewhere we might meet other kids for our eldest to play with.

Happy to camp, rent a house/apartment, move around a bit...We're pretty flexible.

Thanks v much!

Jim

Just a heads up, you will be astounded by the high cost in January if you want an apartment or house near the beach.

The normal rentals at that time are for the first two weeks of January and then the second two weeks. Often you are expected to provide your own bed sheets and towels, some will provide these but do confirm this.
Here is an example in Villa Argentina, a small beach town about an hour or so from Montevideo next to Atlantida.

This place wants $1800US for the first quincena ie the 1st to the 15th of January and then a further $1800US for the next fifteen days.

This is not out of line price wise in this area for January. Someone may be able to suggest somewhere more reasonable but all along the coast tends to be expensive in January and February. March tends to be much less as the kids go back to school then but the weather is usually still very nice.

Camping from what I have heard tends to be done by young people who party all night. Maybe someone knows somewhere quieter that time of year but everyone is on vacation in January here.

You might want to post a request on the Uruguay Facebook group - someone may have contacts.

Good luck. Just a caution, there was a story in the newspaper last year of people renting online and when they turned up the place did not exist.

As Morell said Jan will be super high season,. If you go the way of camping close to the beach you will have the best weather and a lot of people to talk to. I recommend you go from punta to Rocha to camp. And be careful to not being robed in camping grounds. If you are in a budget you can camp close to the brazilian border and buy your groceries there. La barra del chuy is super in Jan.

Since you didn't mention anything about being on a budget I suggest you start by checking the best, Punta del Este.
Punta del Este and the surroundings is a vast area where you can find different types of beaches and beach resorts with all the amenities.
La Barra is for young people who go dancing all night and sunbath during the day.
Montaya beach is preferred by the surfers, Bikini beach by those who want to show their shaped bodies.
La mansa beach in Punta del Este and Solanas in Portezuelo are very family oriented.
All this area is pretty expensive if you don't watch it.
From there you can go further east towards Brazil.
The resorts are cheaper, less populated, less amenities but some of the best beaches and natural environment is there (Punta del Diablo, Santa Teresa Park, Cabo Polonio, etc).
You can also go west towards Montevideo.
There are many beach resorts, more populated and with more services than on the east side.
These resorts are also cheaper but in January you still better compare prices.
I love the El Pinar beach with its huge dunes and very close to Montevideo, Atlantida is probably the most populated resort all year round and therefore has more services.
There are camping grounds on most resorts but in my opinion the best of all of them is the Santa Teresa Park near Punta del Diablo.
Unfortunately you might have to deal with loud teenagers on most of them but they're very safe and friendly in general.

Take a look at Playa Mansa in Punta del Este.

Wow! Thanks so much guys! Really appreciate you taking the time...you've certainly given us some food for thought ;)

We're going to to do some research and may pop back with some other queries in a bit.

Any other thoughts and advice most welcome!

Thanks again!

We stayed at Dunas del Este in Punta Colorada 4 times. Their cabanas are great for a family, breakfast is included, and they have activities for kids, a large outside pool, a good sized inside pool, a hot tub and sauna. Direct TV is provided. They say that internet is available but it is unreliable and it is in a bit of a cell phone dead zone (I could get a signal from the second floor of the cabana most of the time) and there is no AC in the cabanas (there is in the apartments superior but we prefer the cabanas even without AC).
The owners and staff are great. The beach is just across the road, is uncrowded and clean. The kids will love the dunes. You are close to Piriapolis and not far from Punta Del Este. You can be in the old part of Montevideo in less than 2 hours. And, it is safe. Most of the guests are Argentines who are there for that very reason.

Here is the website

This should take you there by Google Maps

You should also look at anyplace using Google Earth and Street View. I was surprised at the extensive coverage.

Hello,
We (family of 5) used airbnb.com to book our 1 month in an apartment in Montevideo. I am sure you will be able to find accommodations for your family. Have fun and be safe. Oh, and enjoy!! :) We love it here and have bough a small farm. Chau

Hi Jim. Welcome to UY.

I would recommend checking Hotel Club SEL Lago, outside Punta del Este. There is a great kids club onsite with organized kids' activities, playroom, indoor heated pool, outdoor pool, mini golf, bikes for use & more. Our family are members there so we can get friends a reduced rate. If you'd like me to inquire, I'd be happy to do so. You will be outside the craziness of Punta del Este but still close enough when you want to go in. You will be close to Tio Tom & Chihuahua Beach. Just be careful as part of Tio Tom is a nude beach.

Looks like Hotel Club SEL Largo is almost $300 US a night in January for 2 adults and 2 children.

I would not leave it to long to book though if you are still set on January. My Uruguayan neighbours have already booked their two weeks in La Paloma for January and have rented out their regular house for the same period.

don't forget the other Uruguay Expat Facebook groups! The most popular one is https://www.facebook.com/groups/uruguayexpatcommunity/ which was made when the moderator of the one mentioned above kicked off several of the long-time favorite memebers! Each group has it's own feeling so try them both and see where you fit.
