The mosquito that carries the Zika virus is expected to be in the whole of Uruguay by the summer and more concentrated in Montevideo and along the coast.

Hey thanks for the heads up Morell. I don't have enough stuff to worry about but I can always depend on you to add even more. I give you credit though, you are consistent with your spreading of doom and gloom. I can always count on you to find and share the most depressing topics you can find pulled straight from El Pais to brighten my day. Why you feel the need to do this kind of baffles me since the last thing people need these days is to be reminded of MORE bad news. Might have something to do with that misery loves company thing. Anyway, keep up the good work Mr. Sunshine!

You are welcome.
Bury your head in the sand if you wish. Others may want to take precautions if they visit or live in the areas mentioned.

Hey Morell answers so many inquiries with legitimate answers that has helped so many. I, for one, like to see reports of incoming storms. etc. I don't believe in the Zika scare, but if it is in the news and M feels it should be shared, then take it or leave it.

Thanks for stating the obvious - "take it or leave it". Yeah Morell does post helpful answers to people's questions and for that he should be commended. My beef is his pulling negative news and rebroadcasting it here. How about pulling positive stories and posting them once in a while instead of always focusing on the negative? Go back through the threads that he originated and you'll see that almost every single one is a depressing story similar to what you would get on the 5 o'clock news in the states. This is not the forum for that and it serves no purpose but to reinforce negative attitudes. People can visit the El Pais website and pick and choose what "news" they want to read about without Mr. Sunshine's constant need to always highlight all the negatives. Yeah, we get it Morell, bad sh*t happens in Uruguay. You made your point.

Feel free to post all the good news stories you find about Uruguay, I am sure I would enjoy reading them.
Not sure what "enemy" login2 is referring to. Sounds a little Trumped Up to me!

The global march forward of Aedes aegypti and Zika is indeed something of wonder. We faced a similar, although less serious, situation with West Nile virus in Canada a decade or so ago.
I find that Uruguayans rely heavily on chemical control of mosquitos. I was impressed by the UY government's attempt at public education about the control of mosquitos (eliminate standing water in pails, etc.). There was a similar campaign in Canada regarding West Nile, and it was effective.
If I was younger, I'd get into the manufacture and fitting of screens on windows and doors in Uruguay. Just a bit of screen, some extruded aluminum for frames, a gasket and some screws could offer a lot of protection. Seems like a good business opportunity.
We are noticing many more mosquitos in Canada this year because of the loss of our bats to white nose disease (fungus that causes bats to come out of hibernation too early and die from cold and starvation). So, another approach one can take is to encourage species that consume mosquitos like bats, dragon flies and many birds.

Thank you Morell! I count on you as a source of reliable information. Please please please don't let the ostriches (do ñandu...?) change your informative missives! My child age bearing daughter is planning to visit. This makes for some modifications! Thanks again.

I swear I had the zika virua last year but my doctor said there were no documented cases. They didn't test me. I wasn't pregnant so the symtoms went away in a week or so. I thought it odd that my eyes were so red, got an unusual rash and was all achy. Like a cold but with the red eyes and rash. I live in Neptunia next to tons of water and tons of mosquitos that love me!

Here's a good news anecdote: Out in the campo, I have seen 4 mosquitoes in 16 months. Each was dealt with quickly.
When we lived in a coastal town, I'd swat 30 mosquitoes each night before diving under the netting (occasionally one would follow me under there.)
FWIW I have heard conflicting news on Zika but regardless of that, I do appreciate Morrell's passing along news stories of potential interest. So thank you for that; let's not shoot the messenger.
