Thatched roof

I mentioned it jokingly on another thread, that I need a new thatched roof. Yay! My poor roof looks like it suffered a bad hair cut, and I fear it will be going bald soon. I'm in Punta Colorada, anyone know anyone? And, typically does one get many quotes and decide based on $$ and amistad between you, or do you use the man a friend suggested, because the friend suggested it?

We got three quotes - you need to compare them as one was to repaint all the roof beams and put a much thicker thatch than the others and was therefore almost twice the lowest bid.

We ended up going with the guy who had done the original job 13 years earlier. He showed us the order in his book and knew the exact amount of reed etc.

The reed comes from the salt marshes we were told around Rio Negro and he had to co - ordinate delivery as needed. The truck would arrive around 4.00am and unload, the workers would show up by 7.30 am. Any left over new reed was left covered with tarps and they hauled away all the old reed each day. There is also old cement to be removed and new cement to be installed at the end of the job. They also removed a lot of wire. It makes some mess on the inside as they pull wires through the roof to attach each bundle and bits and pieces come through as well. They did not work in the rain and it took six weeks with four workers.

If you do not know the thatcher, perhaps ask to see examples of his work. Someone who sells a lot of quinchos is Van Bevern - they may be able to make a recommendation in your area.

We paid a deposit to book the work about a month ahead and then paid in installments as the work was done with 10% on completion. He laid out the payment schedule in his estimate. We paid in cash plus gave the workers a bonus when they were done.
