One of our reasons for moving to Uruguay would be safety for our family. What levels of safety and security should we be aware if both in town and rural areas ? Bearing in mind we are coming from South Africa

Physical security is rarely a problem. Theft can be depending on your location. A couple of dogs is always a good idea.

Many people use bars on doors and windows, monitored alarm systems and perimeter fencing along with dogs.
Break ins ( houses and cars ) are common in some areas especially along the coast and in Montevideo.
S. African friends find Uruguay very safe compared to what they were used to.
