Hello ExpatExchange.com Members!

One area of interest for many expatriates is the need for assistance in
settling in and the management of culture shock. In order to identify
the information most needed by expats as they adapt to international
living, we'd like to know the biggest hurdles you faced in the process
of moving overseas.

Please help us in this project by answering these few questions:

When you moved to Venezuela, what was the most difficult part of settling
in there?

How much difficulty did you have with culture shock in Venezuela?

What would be the best, single piece of advice you'd give to an expat
(or soon to be expat) in Venezuela?

Well I'll be moving over to Ven in Jan or Feb 2010 (not long to go) from London UK.

I have made a friend via the Internet so will have some help settling in. But I also need to hook up with some expats to show me the ropes.

I have been here a little over one month and so far, the hardest part for me is adjusting to the way business is conducted here. I have learned that when I see something in the grocery store that I like with a long shelf life, stock up on it - it may not be back in the store for another month. I find people here to be very friendly and for the most part, patient with those with limited Spanish. But definitely, Spanish is a MUST.

Also, it is customary to always greet people (especially those you see somewhat frequently). Sometimes when I'm walking somewhere my mind is drifting to other thoughts and places when I realize someone just said "good afternoon". So, politeness is important.

That's all I got for now - I'm sure I'll have more to say in a few months.

I am living on the outskirts of Caracas, accompagnying my venezoelan husband for a job experience. I am German and would like to get in contact with other expat's wifes - do you have an idea what I could do? As far as I can see, there is no expat network in Venezuela / Caracas, yet...
