The mainland of Venezuela is quite different from the islands close by. Margarita is the largest and is a duty-free tourist destination of about 500,000 residents. That's where I live. Los Roques are made up of several small islands. On the mainland you'll find climates to suit your desire, from snow and cold of the Andes (Merida) to Rain forests (Canaima, Angel Falls), to heat (Maracaibo), and BIG cities like Caracas, smaller cities like Puerta la Cruz, to fishing villages like Cumana. Margarita is much more laid back, more to my liking of the slower pace. I am retired so I didn't try for a work visa. After 5 years I will be eligible for my "residencia", and since I bought my condo in 2005, and plan to stay put here, that is important to me. If you haven't gone to the website of the US Embassy in Caracas go there and do your homework.
