How safe is it living and working in Vietnam, specifically HCMC? Is it safe to walk the streets at night? What's the crime rate? Are the Police overly aggressive?

Vietnam is one of the most safety countries in the world, i think. Gun is prohibited here. thieves and robbery does exit. Just keep eyes to your luggage and avoid some places at night. You will be fine.

It's as safe as any other big city. There is little violent crime, especially against foreigners. But, if you do stupid things, stupid things will happen.
The biggest risk you'll have is from snatch and grab thieves. They can be aggressive, but rarely confrontational. They want to grab what you have and get out of there. That's why one should use common sense here, especially when carrying/looking at Ipods, cameras and cell phones. Don't wander around while looking at them. Put yourself in a position where someone can't just ride up on a motorbike and grab our belongings.
Compared to the US, the Police here are relatively passive. Rarely will they bother foreigners, unless you're doing something stupid, like being loud and drunk or driving crazy (at least non-Vietnam crazy).

It is safe as long as you are sensible. Just like any other place in the world that you are not a Native off, if do not use common sense things can happen. The People are Beautiful and want to help you if they can just don't trust eveyone.

Just don't take it to heart when VN's do something to upset you, i.e, break something of yours, most will laugh, but this is a nervous reaction by them, of course they will never offer to pay to fix it, as with any accidents, it is always the foreigners fault. Same when you try to speak Viet, most will laugh at you, of course never attempting to understand you, a real incentive to learn their crazy language.
