Hi all,
I'm Vietnamese-American living in America, looking for a partner I can practice and learn Vietnamese with through Skype. I have some basic Vietnamese, but my pronunciation is not great. Perhaps we could help each other study, with you learning English and me learning Vietnamese?
Also, any tips as to which textbooks would be best would be great!
If you're interested, send me a message! Thanks :)

You should specify which VN pronunciation you want to learn as well as which you already know. I think most Viet Kieu know southern VN pronunciation. Central and niorthernronunciation is quite different. Have fun learning.

Travelwriter - Yes it is true that the accents are different, both in pronunciation and vocabulary. In fact, one north Vietnamese poster on another forum wrote that when she came to southern Vietnam, she had to use ENGLISH because she and the southerners couldn't understand each other speaking Vietnamese.

Learning Vietnamese is not much difficult I think. If a foreigner learns, he has to learn the official Vietnamese as the Hanoi speak.

Northern Vietnamese is recognised as 'standard Vietnamese'. However, if you wish only to learn to speak, I suggest you learn the local accent of where ever you live. This will make learning less confusing for you. If you wish to learn to read and write as well, learning the northern accent will help you learn how to read and write a lot more easily.
This is because the northern accent pronounces all vowels clearly, whereas accents in the centre and south omit many vowels when speaking, and they also completely change the pronunciation of almost all vowels they actually do use.
As a small example of the different accents, my sister in law's name "Oanh" is pronounced the the English word 'Won' in the south, 'Wine' in the north, but she pronounces it 'On' here in Nha Trang.
If later you have any questions, just PM me. I have spoken Vietnamese for 45 years. No, it was not easy to learn.

If you're still living in the U.S you can stop by Little Saigon and practice your Vietnamese with people who shop there?
