How do you get your US Social Security?

As US Social Security does NOT send monthly benefits to Vietnam, I'm curious how American retirees living long term in Vietnam get their Social Security. Do you use US Banks, foreign banks, or WHAT?

Send it to yourself online via Western Union, Wells Fargo has a cooperative program with Vietcom Bank, have it sent by someone in the US via Western Union or Moneygram. Use your debit card. Many possibilities.

You probably got or figured out an answer by now but since I applied for social security in 2015 I have always gotten my social security send to my US bank and since living here in Vietnam I simply make withdrawals on the select dates out of an ATM machine and since the charges are relatively small it suits me just fine for the convenience . When I lived in the Philippines of course I could get my social security direct into a Philippine banks account but still made all of my withdrawals through an ATM.

I read that the US Embassy here in Hanoi is working on this problem, and hopes to be able to provide better SS service in the near future, but for the time being I simply use both a US bank and a local Hanoi bank, and transfer funds with Xoom.com. I just made a transaction this AM to fund my local bank. VN banks have very strange currency rules that I'm still trying to figure out! You should read the website of the local US Embassy here in Vietnam - quite informative.

Perhaps the easiest way to do it is to have your SS automatically deposited in a Charles Schwab bank account. Then you can withdraw it here without any ATM fees on either side (Schwab reimburses you) but there still is some loss on the currency conversion.

Use VPBank in HCMC which caters to foreigners along with excellent website using Transferwise.com to obtain the lowest exchange rates or just your regular bank ATM Visa or Mastercard! Want to get fancy open up a Schwab.com checking account and stock account hold a few shares of stock then you will not have any ATM fees at all anywhere in the world!
