Retire in Veitnam

Hello, I am retiring early at 52

I been doing research into Vietnam and other Asian countries as a possible destination.

I have severe degenerative joint disease in both shoulders so I need more tropical weather to ease the arthritis. By profession I am a social worker and educator so I am looking for a local community (no gated communities for me).

Financially, I am far from rich but after settling in will have a budget of about 1300-1800 monthly. SSI doesn't kick in for 10 years;

In the mean time, I do have enough saving to buy an apartment and savings to get me through until SSI kicks in.

As far as lifestyle, It's important for me to add value to my community (volunteering, small business etc).

I like to stay active, workout, enjoy community, go out to dinner, movies, cafe's etc. I will embrace the language of my host community.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Respectfully,
Michael

I'm seeing that this is a strange place to come fishing, your not getting many replies? are you doing this on your own and do you intend finding a nice lady to settle with?

I moved to Hanoi last Nov after visiting many times since 2008. I'm now 74 and in pretty good health (just limping on a funny foot). Vietnam is a wonderful place because we Yanks are so valued here (they love our US accent for English teaching which is in great demand). I have a similar income and have a very good life here and very good Viet friends as well. I have more than enough cash to travel (Myanmar, Singapore, Taiwan, etc.) and eat out about 70% of the time. I warn you that shopping is not exactly good here, and I do get tired of Viet food, but Bangkok is quite close for shopping and there's plenty of pizza, Indian and Korean/Japanese food around. I love it mostly for the exceptional friendliness of the locals, but it is still sometimes a frustrating place to life. VN gives me a 1 year tourist visa provided I make visa runs every 3 months during that year (there is also a business visa, but I'm quite happy as it stands). You won't be alone as there are thousands of other expats around, but I too avoid those expat ghettos. I live in a $400. a month studio apartment near downtown Hanoi - love this crazy town!

Living in Vietnam GuideLiving in Vietnam Guide

It's an exciting time to live in Vietnam - with more and more tall buildings crowding the city skylines and rural areas developing rapidly as well. Learning Vietnamese poses a major challenge for most expats, but Vietnam's warm, welcoming people make up for the challenge.
