Hi we are moving to Yemen in two months from Venezuela and I am wondering about dress code, things to bring with me, good areas in Sa'na to live, clubs, a nanny for our 9 month old girl and working (I am a legal editor). Can anyone give me any ideas or suggestions

Hi Joanna,
Sorry, but I'm not moving to Yemen, but I wanted to reply to your post. I had thought about studying Arabic in Yemen for the summer, but I decided against it due to how volatile the area is right now. I've read a couple of articles that suggest jobs for foreigners are difficult to get due to the economy and that the dress for females is quite restricting when compared to North and South American garments. When I was researching Yeman, on the Google search engine, I typed "Yemen life" and read a slew of first hand experiences from foreigners in Yemen. I bet you have a great time in Yemen...is it a permanent move? :)

Hi,
Weather in Yemen is pretty dry throughout the year, carry lots of Vaseline to avoid chapped skin...People are friendly...the city is architecturally very beautiful and authentic in its appearance. Do not expect any night life except for some private expat parties!! Do contact me in case you are in Yemen....
Cheers, Deen

Joanne, I do not live in Yemen, but I visited it once with my Arabic husband to his Yemeni relatives. People over there are very friendly - if these are your relatives or friends. I really enjoyed my small trip, the city, the market, etc. But... Women on the street are supposed to cover entire body. Well.. I didn't - I wore long trousers and a shirt with covered hands, not covered head - the first trip outside in the town WITH my relatives and WITH my husband - a young teenager through a stone in me. Thanx God it did not hit me or my child... The boy was punished... but just this fact! It is not free and easy to walk around if you do not wear the same black clothes covering all you.
