Aden or Sana'a?

Hi all,
I'm moving to Yemen at the start of January to teach English to adults. I have the choice of living in either Aden or Sana'a, and was wondering if anyone has any advice? I'm a 25yr old female from Britain, and have just lived in Tripoli, Libya for a year, so am prepared for living in a relatively strict Muslim society in terms of clothing etc, as I gather it's pretty much the same deal as in Libya. However, where to live? I do love the sea, but only if I can UTILISE it. As a woman, are there any private places where I could swim in the sea? What about diving? Does anybody go diving there at all? Also, I've heard the heat can be unbearable in the summer months- does anyone have first hand experience? What about Sana'a? Is it more strict that Aden? I've heard the weather there is much nicer- is this true? What about outside the city? Do people go hiking etc? I hope someone has some answers for me, as books are only helpful up until a point.
Thankyou!
Mel

Aden will be better for a lady. People are much more liberal.

Good Luck

Hi,

Not sure if this too late or not, but it is never too late. Aden will be a MUCH better for a 25 yo young lady from britin to live in. It is more modrenaized and people are more civilized than Sana'a... My advice is Aden hands down... if you still have the option... if you still need anything let me know...

Good luck

I have just returned from over two years in Yemen and have spent time in both Aden and Sana'a. Both are interesting cities. There was at one time plenty of beaches open to women in Aden, but if you are not willing to swim in an abayah today the only one is at the Sheraton hotel. I believe there is a woman's beach club there. Aden is a little more cosmopolitan but doesnt have as large an expat community as Sana'a. The Summer months are very hot and humid. The slight breeze off the Indian ocean can make it more bearable than Hodeidah. Sana'a on the other hand is a larger city, more conservative, but with a larger expat community. You will find a lot to do there. You need to be careful about security concerns in both places. There is hiking in Sana'a and some expats go regularly. There are a greater variety of restaurants in Sana'a. Weather in Sana's is splendid all year round mostly because of the altitude. But do to that it is very dry and dusty. I personally like Aden.
