Your experiences could be helpful for me and I would like to ask more about the direction the country is going and investments, if you are willing, but your response was private and anonymous so I don't know how to contact you. At this early point, I am primarily focused on Ometepe.

As permanent residents here we see all of the news and hear all of the opinions. My usual answer is "everything is relative".

I wish Ortega would go away and an honest candidate only interested in helping Nicaragua would appear but it is not yet on the horizon. The people here are no better nor worse than the people in any other country but the laws are stronger in the states to keep people and politicians in line.

Ortega will continue to try to get the laws changed to allow him to run for another term. Will he be successful? No one knows. Few people had thought he would win the last election but the competition was splintered and he won with only 35% of the votes. His popularity has not improved since and he has many critics.

We work with many of the schools here and the two years since he was elected, we have seen the amount of books and supplies to schools greatly increase. Yes, he is corrupt and is becoming very rich but he does try to provide for the poor people though he could do a lot more.

Investors view Ortega negatively because of his stands on the world stage but during his brief term the new coastal law and new expat retiree benefits were put in place. Both of these legislations were extremely well-received and show that Nicaragua wants more foreign investment and invites expats.

If all bad, corrupt or at least, inept politicians were to disappear we would find large voids not only in Managua but also in Washington, DC and many other capitals of the world.

Expats want to move to a country with stable governments but if politics are a concern then there are few inexpensive countries to consider. The world and Nicaragua has greatly improved in the past 20 years.
