I plan a visit to Granada in May 2011 as I am interested in Granada as a retirement location. I am a single female and wondering about the safety of solo travel and living. I am an experienced traveler so I understand the basic 'rules of the road' regrading safety. Looking for specific information.

Also, any insights or experience retiring in Granada?

You bring up a point that we find interesting in Nicaragua and especially in Granada. There are so many single older female expats here. At social gatherings I often find there are a minority of males and certainly a minority of couples but many single women.

Are they more adventuresome than men to come to Nicaragua or do the men avoid the social gatherings because they have come here to get away from social groups? I'm not sure and will leave the topic to a psychologist.

We consider Nicaragua very safe and certainly safer than the rest of Central America and most major cities in all of America. Having said that, we do follow certain rules to ensure the statistics are in our favor. If out late at night we take a taxi back to our home. We do not drive at night since the ox carts do not have brake lights or reflectors. We endeavor to be friends with our neighbors and we are heavily involved with community activities including the local police and the mayor's office. Like anywhere, ugly Americans are treated like ugly Americans. Embrace the local culture and it embraces you.

You ask for insights in retiring to Nicaragua. We love it here but it is not for everyone. I have a website that tries to show the real Nicaragua at www.nicaragua-guide.com including our diaries from the day we decided to move here. A blog-style website that embraces Nicaragua is at www.gotonicaragua.com started by the authors of the Moon books.

When you visit, look us up.

I live in ES but visit Nicaragua often, lived there for some months a decade back. There is now a large ex pat community in Granda, and like all ex pat communities the world over embraces the good, the bad and the ugly, as at home, human nature. My advice is to find a temporary, a few days, host on www.couchsurfing.org there are now many female Nicaraguan members, local and ex pat, long term volunteer on Couch Surfing, a non profit hospex portal, there also exists localyte.com, native guides who will answer questions about the area in advance of your departure, just avoid again and again the real estate cons, volunteering is a great way to keep busy and gain trust in local and long term ex pat community, there are many places to visit within a few hours from Granada, view www.vianica.com and Managua the capital is only 50 minutes or less on the Microbus, parts of Managua, like any other large city may be risky day or night so find a travel companion to the city when you need do errands or stay with a seasoned CS host there. Make all your your on line contacts well in advance, do not just show up and expect to be prom queen, rent at first, then look around to purchase with trusted local friends, one step at a time. The sad truth is that many people are disillusioned or have issues in developing countries and take the geographical cure to places like
granada and other ex pat havens for acceptance. If you need detail information and live in usa meddage me, I have a magicjack. buena suerte, vease www.livemocha.com and www.123teachme.com for volunteeer ops try www.volunteersouthamerica.net with lots of Nica links,

Thank you so much for your e-mail. I like your observations about the social gatherings.... interesting and insightful. I was on the path to Cuenca, Ecuador when I saw the TV show, House Hunters International, one of my favorites, and fell instantly in love with Granada. I began researching Granada (and Nicaragua) and I think that I have found everything that I am looking for. I am excited to a visit so I can compare my impressions with reality.

Spent the morning reading about your journy and adventurs in Nicaragua. A different pace for sure. I admire your patience.

I will contact you while visiting. After more reading seems end of March may be better than May... need to coordinate work so we will see.

Thank you very much!
Marsha
