My wife and I have heard a lot of great things about relocating to nic. I will have no trouble adjusting and wife will be a little slower. I have been in 24 other countries while in military. I am retired Navy Seal so we have retirement and wifes retired nurse. The only problem is in the middle 80’s I worked training the Contras out of bases in Honduras. Are old times forgotten and will this be a problem for wife and I moving there

The people of Nicaragua are more open-minded thanthe people in the states. While they still have low opinions of Reagan and Bush for obvious reasons, they do not associate the leaders of government with the people. My wife and I have never run into any anti-American sentiment.
Having said that, I would not tell people here upon your arrival your role in the 80s. That would be like arriving in the states and telling your new neighbors your old job was trying to install a Communist government.
Come on down and enjoy Nicaragua. The past is past. Rent for at least 3 or 4 months then see what you think.
We enjoy it here very much.

I flew arms to the contras and have no problem at all. Matter of fact, I have a gold dredge operation going where most of the fighting was taking place.

Bushamy - where exactly do you live? Can you talk about your dwelling, how long you've been there, how you get around, and such? Thanks.

Hi, Amy and I (Darrell) have lived in Granada, Nicaragua for the past 5 years. We live in a large colonial home and are very active in community work.
Amy has an art studio and gallery on the main street Calle Calzada. I am active in various community work and some foundation work.
For getting around we have a SUV and a motorcycle though Amy usually uses a bicycle. Taxis are very cheap, less than $.50. Buses go everywhere in Nicaragua and are very reliable.
Due to the poor image of Nicaragua I devote considerable time promoting Nicaragua or least running down false rumors. To that end I created the website www.nicaragua-guide.com for expats considering Nicaragua. It includes our diaries from the day we decided to move to Nicaragua.
We are quite happy here. One caveat is that the low cost of living does not always attract the cream of the crop expats but we are seeing more normal couples moving here.
