I am planning to retire in Nicaragua and am looking at Malagalpa and Granada. I'd like to hear from anyone who can provide some insight on the pros/cons of these two cities. Thanks!

I'm assuming you have referred to my website www.nicaragua-guide.com for the basics about life here in Nicaragua and specifically in Granada.

Granada is the number one tourist destination city in Nicaragua, is a colonial city and only 40 minutes from Managua where you can find anything. Granada has quite a few expats, many restaurants, bars, community activities and is quite warm though it has the lake breezes.

Matagalpa is much cooler being in the more mountainous area and is about two hours from Managua. There are few expats there. It is certainly cheaper to live in Matagalpa and a small farm can be bought for very little money. There are a lot of Germans in the area so it is not unusual to see blond, blue-eyed children there. You would need to be more immersed in the culture here.

It all depends on what you are looking for. The Moon books will give you additional info on the two areas. You might look at Jinotega since it is even cooler and has a large lake.

Thanks Darrell for replying. Your comments were most helpful. I've read so much since then, I need to re-visit.

Interesting you mention Germans in Malagalpa. I read that the German gov. built a water treatment plant there and that the city has the only cemetary for foreigners.

I'm beginning to think I should just fly down and look around.
