Mosquitos and other insects

Searching for information on living in Nica, I've noticed many houses have lovely inside gardens. I've also seen dining area in a patio type room that is open on the sides.

My question is what do you do about flies, mosquitos, and other insects that must abound in the warm, humid climate.

I have only lived in Granada and the San Juan del Sur regions. We live in a large colonial home so we essentially live outdoors. There are periods of the year when there are more mosquitos, flies and the no-see-ums but the majority of time there just aren't that many insects. In Granada there are less mosquitos than we experienced in Charlotte and many less pests than in Illinois or Wisconsin. There is a two week period when there seems to be more flies but at least they don't attack. When there are mosquitos we simply use mosquito repellent. By the way, we found that applying Listerine (no flavor type) works against mosquitos without that repellent smell. We have not found flying pests to be an issue here. The many geckos on the walls are quite effective against our flying pests.
