Banking in Granada

Citi Bank used to own Banco Uno, but I can't find a bank in Granada that is associated with one in the States? Would it just be easier to open a new account in Granada and if so, any suggestions?

Technically you must be a resident of Nicaragua to open a bank account. In reality you can open one in several of the major banks here. I know you can open one at BDF and BanCentro and probably at BAC.

Normally you need at least two reference letters from existing bank customers though sometimes just two residents or citizens. I hear they may be asking now for a commercial references or sometimes just showing your utility bills will suffice. If your first Nica account then you may need a letter from your USA, Canadian or European bank. If 2nd account then you need reference from first account.

This is Nicaragua and the rules change weekly so check with the bank. Do not ask a bank employee, ask the bank manager. The employees often do not know the procedures.

Thanks Darrell, your info is a big help! I also need broadband during the year we plan to reside in Granada. I understand that businesses can get broadband. It is essential that I have broadband so I can get rather lengthy texts emailed back here. DSL just won't work. I am a writer, (despite what my notes might read like), and I have to email my dribble back up here periodically. Should I present myself to Claro as being a "business" . . . a "writer"? Do you think that might help?

Broadband is a relative term for speed. Not sure why DSL would not be sufficient since even a book would take only a few seconds to send. In any case, most people here have cablenet Internet going to a WIFI system so should work fine.

Internet speeds here ( in the major cities) are sufficient for everything I do. The only Internet users I warn are those that are on it constantly such as giving webinars. If you lose electricity or Internet then you are cut off.

Hope this answered your questions.
