Hello all! My wife and I are planning on moving to Nicaragua within the next 2 years. We plan to buy land in the next 6 months. We are undecided as of yet on exactly where, but Ometepe, Matagalpa, Teustepe and El Castillo are what we have narrowed it down to (if you can call it that!). We will be doing our next visit in 3 weeks! We would love to opportunity to meet up with anyone who has already taken the plunge. Please message us if you would be interested in meeting us.
Our plans are to build a hotel/ hostel/ eco-resort and eventually a school, so we would obviously be very excited to talk with anyone about their experience doing business in Nicaragua.
We are also open to the idea of working with other people with similar goals, either on a 'helping each other out' level or even possibly a partnership. We have been in contact with a few people from this forum who have similar goals and are excited to see that their are a good number of like-minded people out there!

There are lots of people with similar goals and many work with foundations building the schools, community centers or libraries. When you come down it will be easy to network. If you wish to network before you come down, post your wish on www.nicaliving.com, www.gotonicaragua.com or the Yahoo Group Ben Linder. You can also Google the many expat blogs to find people at these locations such as Ometepe.
Be careful buying land. Deal only with major realtors and make sure you have a good bilingual lawyer.
Regards
Darrell

Darrell, Thanks for the tips! We are still a bit premature for our lawyer search, but would love any referrals - also any recommended REA's would be greatly appreciated. The property that we had our eye on just went 'under contract' so we will be resuming our search - but since we really haven't nailed down the region we are most excited about, we aren't too bummed about not being able to get the land we'd been most interested in.
Greatly appreciate your taking the time to reply! Sincerely, Hermes

If you are looking for land in the north of Nicaragua, you may want to check out Jinotega and Lake Apanas, 40 min. north of Matagalpa. The guide books call this the most scenic road in all of Nicaragua. And the entire road has been newly paved. The real jewel however is lake Apanas. Over the last 6 years I've purchased 5 properties on the lake for a total of 40 acres. The area is still relatively undiscovered but it's just too beautiful to stay that way for long. So far I've been putting in roads, electricity, and water lines, planting coffee, vegetable crops rock walls, and ornamental gardens; almost everything will grow here, including native orchids that cover a huge rock outcrop. This year we finished construction on a one room school building for the local kids and have plans for future development. Feel free to drop by, its a very friendly place. Km post 169 (measured from Managua) between Jinotega and San Rafael del Norte. elliott.garth@gmail.com
