We are thinking about buying a car here in Nicaragua. Not being a resident, we understand that we can't register the car here, but we can own it and drive it. We want to drive to other countries to visit. Having a good documented history is necessary, I know. Buying insurance too, but what about driving it to Honduras and El Salvadore? Maybe on to Guatemala on a visit?

You're correct that you can kind of own it but not being able to register it means you would be driving illegally since you can not get license plates. Any policeman can pull you over and give you a ticket. Not having license plates I don't see how you can cross borders. You would need to become a resident or buy it and put it in someone else's name.
Maybe I am missing something.

We drove down here in a one ton ford pickup. We had to have it registered in a friends name until we got our cedulas. However in this time we bought a used car from a private individual and still could not register it. My wife is afraid to drive the pickup because of the narrow streets. If you buy a car from an individual the car will have plates. Take the circulation (title) to the insurance company they will look at the title and sell you insurance. We have been stopped a 100 times at check points and as long as you produce the title, drivers license, insurance ( the insurance will be in your name) and an inspection paper. We have never been questioned by the police. We have had this car for two and a half years.
