One of the bad things about Nicaragua. Custom taxes are very high on most items you receive regardless of the deliery service. Even books are taxed now. I received an electronic keyboard and the tax was $600. Two cell phones were taxed at almost $300. If you become a resident you can get a $500 exemption each six months but you still have to go to customs and retrieve you mail which is very difficult.

Alternative health centers? We do have alternative health doctors and we do have stores that sell most of the alternatives but not sure about a center.

Those tax figures seem shocking. Do you mean "$" as cordobas or US dollars or what?

$500 means 500 dollars US.
C$500 means 500 cordobas ($1=24 cordobas)

Yes, custom taxes are high. That's why many people bring the items with them. Or become residents to get the $20,000 household goods exemption.

Could you clarify a few things for me. You are talking about import duties here correct? When I am ready to make the move to Nicaragua, certain items can be brought in under the aforementioned exemption. Do I need 'resident status' prior to bringing in items under the exemption? Does this mean that I have to stay in Nicaragua long enough to get the resident status resolved, and then move to Nicaragua in earnest? (Seems like a chicken/egg problem). When you speak of the yearly goods exemption, are you talking about things I bring back when I travel to and from Nicaragua, or does it also apply to new items shipped to Nicaragua such as items bought online or purchased for me by friends and family? I believe I also read somewhere that I can bring in a car every few years with limitations as to age and value. Sorry for so many questions and thanks in advance.

Yes, import duties.

You need to be a resident to get the $20,000 household goods exemption. You do not have to remain in Nicaragua while they process your residency. In addition you get a $500 exemption every six months for personal things you wish to bring in to Nicaragua. You can only use it once every six months even if the item was only $10. It is a good idea to have the invoice or they will determine the value. If you have something shipped to you then it must be from a relative or friend, you cannot just order things via the Internet and expect it to arrive with Customs getting involved. If you work with a service like Aerocasillas then you must forewarn them before the item arrives in Miami.

As part of your pensionado residence status you can bring in a car up to $25,000 value and less than 10 years old with taxes or duties. I believe you can do so every four years.

Here is the Aerocasillas staement on handling shipped goods coming in.

Tax Exemption
Customs law allows tax exemption for a shipment received for personal use every six months up to a $500 CIF value (total invoice cost + freight + insurance) as long as the package has been sent by a friend or relative. .

Steps to Exempt your Import from paying Taxes:
Enter a Tax Exemption Prealert at least 24 hours before it arrives in Miami for the package you wish to import with the tax exemption. It is absolutely necessary that you include the tracking number (tracking UPS, Fedex, DHL, USPS, etc.), package value, name of the family or friend that shipped the package, as well as the name of the cosignee that will apply his/her tax exemption right.

Present at our nearest counter the following documents. Please DO NOT send them by fax.

1.

Fully completed permit, signed exactly as in your ID.

Print the Special Permit

2.

Original and 3 signed copies of your ID (Cedula or passport) .

NOTE: If the documentation is presented by a third-party that is not the cosignee of the package requesting tax exemption he/she must present the original identification of the cosignee and his/her own.

If you would like Aerocasillas to handle the exemption process on your behalf, there will be a $16.95 charge that includes: fiscal stamps, copies of all documentation, storage and package handling, tax sales and appearance before Customs Authorities. Aerocasillas does not charge for the tax exemption itself, but for the process carried out before Customs.

If you wish to handle the tax exemption process yourself before Customs Authority, you will only have to pay Aerocasillas $5.00 for the storage when you request delivery of the air guide at the Customs Deposit.

¡Remember!
The exemption process is NOT AUTOMATIC, you must confirm beforehand, through a Exemption Prealert, which one is the package that you wish to import exempted from tax.

Each person can request tax exemption once every six months for a signel package that is for personal and not commercial use cosigned to your name and sent from abroad by a physical person, with a CIF Value (total invoice value + freight + insurance) equal to or less than $500.00.

If your package arrives in multiple flights you will only be able to import tax exempt one of the packages as per request of Customs. For this, you may not apply package consolidation.

The application of the exemption right IS SUBJECT TO to the value estimated by the customs agent.

Aerocasillas is not responsible for changes in interpretation of the norm related to this process.

When we moved here we brought a 1995 Jeep SUV and a trailer full of household items.

Note-I am not an expert but few people are. Consult a lawyer for assistance in interpretation.

Darrell
