Arriving Granada on Saturday 27th

I'm arriving on Granada in a couple of days and have a homestay and Spanish school arranged. I would very much like to meet expats there, as I'm scoping out Nicaragua for retirement late next year, and community will be what makes or breaks it for me. Eventually I hope to make local friends as well as friends among expats, but to begin with, expats know best the ins and outs of getting oneself moved there. I'm also interested in finding out what kind of housing would be possible for someone planning to start by living frugally and then hopefully adding income as I get various things up and running. Plus, I'd like to just see sights within shouting distance of Granada, and aside from the outings the language school arranges it would be nice to get to look around, if it's not too strenuous a hike (I'm not as fit as I hope to be once retired and with time to exercise!) Thank you for any offers of help or suggestions.

1. Purchase an up to date Nicaragua country specific Guidebook at your local bookstore travel section at home and if not available locally purchase on Amazon dot Com http://www.amazon.com/books/dp/1566917565 Moon's Nicaragua is the best.

2. If your Spanish school offers a part time volunteer opportunity, take it. Earn trust of locals and foreigners involved in the project.

3. There are many great Hostels in Granada, where you can meet backpackers, long term working Ex Pats and Volunteers. who have the best networks used by low budget travelers, there are also native guides who take groups to Volcanoes and places such as Isla Omotepe often by bus and very inexpensive over weekends and holidays, ask in the Hostels.
3. Once you are there ask locals and long term Ex Pats about renting rooms or apartments by the Month (cheapest) (Remember locals outnumber 'Ex Pats' by about 80 to 1! and that is in places such as Granada. So practice your Spanish day in and day out.
4. Click on the online Nicaragua Travel Guide http://www.vianica.com/ an online Guidebook..other resources are http://www.vidagranada.com/ and vidagranada.wordpress.com both bi lingual and updated daily in English by a newbie Ex Pat....http://northof60-furthersouth.com/from-online-research-to-sandals-on-the-ground-in-nicaragua/ has all the links you'll need. Above all, keep a low profile and be patient. There are many other websites, bloqs and travellogs just go onto to Bing, Google or Ask.com. Buen viaje y Buena suerte.
