Police?

I am coming to Nicaragua for a visit with my wife who is from there. I lived there for a short period a few years ago in Rivas. I found that anytime I was in a rental car every policemen that saw me would pull me over and do all they could to find something wrong and if they couldn't something, some would even say I had done something wrong when I knew I hadn't. Of course we all know what they want, but when you are traveling around the country and get stopped 1 or 2 times a day it gets expensive. Has that changed at all, and if not what is the best way to handle it. I am always polite and never say or do anything to irritate them. Thanks for any advice.

You will get different opinions on this but it is now against the law for police to ask for money to pay the fine. I get stopped every six months or so but they usually check my documents then wish you a good day. I have not be asked to pay a fine for several years. Having said that, there are always a few rogue policeman that will still try especially with a rental since they assume you are a tourist and will not want the hassle or can speak the language.

I think it is much better now.

Regards

Darrell
