Hi, everyone. I finally made it to Granada and am having to recover all of my belongings. I was robbed on the highway between Managua and Granada. Someone punched a hole in my tire, and when I stopped a couple offered help. One of them distracted me helping with the tire while the other one stole my backpack out of the front seat and then they both took off.
Anyway, I have to go to Managua on Monday to get a new passport and will need to have some money wired as soon as I have an ID to do so. If anyone has suggestions or advice on the best way to get to the embassy from Granada, that would be helpful. If anyone is available to meet today or this evening, that would be great as well.
I did have a spare phone in my luggage and have activated that here today. My phone # is 87342623. Unfortunately, my computer was stolen as well, and that contained my entire consulting business. I have a backup in the states but am having to use internet cafes for the duration of my trip.
If anyone knows where I can rent or buy a cheap laptop, that would be helpful too.
Fortunately I had put most of my money inside my suitcase, so they didn´t get a lot of cash and I have enough to pay for my passport and gas for the rental car.
Just wanted to connect, as it´s been a harrowing day for me and would be nice to join some friends for a beer or two...

On a related note, Fernando Palacios from Granada stopped to help me actually change the tire and escorted me to the police station in Masaya, stayed with me all afternoon while they did all the necessary paperwork, and then escorted me to my hotel in Granada. He was my angel and the reason I love Nicaragua so much. The people here today have been very kind and helpful, offering me assistance and money when needed.

Qfactor, that is horrible! I had a similar experience in Venezuela. I was at the ticket counter, checking in and a gentleman distracted me on my left, while another person, took off with my brief case, containing $5,000.00 cash and some of my jewelry, along wiht some very important documents. When I requested to see the video recordings of the security cámaras, there were not able to provide them. I had to choose from getting on the plane and coming home or wait ´til next day and request to see the supervisor, and do all of the paper work, etc. etc. etc. soI had to take the loss and since then, I never keep any money on my suitcases, brief cases, wallets, etc. It doesn´t make any difference which country you go to, there will always be deshonest people, you just have to be careful. Galerias has a laptop with a printer for $400.00. Going to a ciber is actuallly better, than having to carry your laptop along.

Thanks! I'll see if I can find Galerias to take a look. Someone also mentioned that Claro and Movistar sell laptops, so I'll look into that as well...

Claro and Movistar do not sell laptops, they have promotions where they assign a laptop to the customers that contract with them for a year or more for their services. Look in the local newspaper La prensa under office equipment.

If you haven't priced eletronicos lately, you may be surprised. We bought a very nice Nikon digital for $130 in Granada last year. We were in comtex (what a nice place!) on Saturday and they had those 7" laptops on sale for about $300. I looked at a sony digital for $400, only $75 more than on amazon. Simon's had some nice deals lately also. Prices are not as bad as they were several years ago.
