It was northeast of Leon. 70 mile straight line from Poneloya. We live in a two story house on the beach and it shook pretty good. Water was sloshing out of our water tank. Lost elect. for two hours. Few pictures need straightening but no damage.

We felt a long rolling quake in Granada. We are watching the local news and it is reporting some damage. People in Managua are upset. The disaster response is good here and they are on it. There have been four aftershocks so far.
Rock and roll...

You can get the details by going to the USGS site and latest earthquakes report.

Wow, sounds pretty scary to me. I hope all are safe. I didn't see anything on the news but will go to the USGS to get an idea as to how bad it was. Thanks for the info majicjack.
Be safe all!

Again I hope all are ok. I did do a little Googling on Nica and earthquakes are not foreign to the country. However I did not find which area, if any, seems to have the least.
Also wondering if this has anything to do with the quakes that Chili's been having? I should think that it's possible since it's all along the West coast.
Also I was surprised to see that Nicaragua, as small as it is, has 19 active volcanoes. This is pretty amazing, not to mention a bit disconcerting.

We just had another shaking here in Poneloya. 2;30 PM It was short but fairly strong.
The one yesterday was located about 40 miles from here northeast of leon. If you will go to the USGS and latest earthquakes in Nicaragua, it will give you the information

There is no particular area that has earthquakes here. It is pretty much spread all over. We have had two 6. or better near here in the last three weeks. There is a fault line that runs from Alaska to Chile and we just happen to be on it. The volcanos have been evacuated two time since we have been here. Telic and San Cristibol. We have pictures of the start of an eruption that were taken driving into Leon from Poneloya. Usually around here the volcanos will act up a little if we are going to have an earthquake but they have't on this last batch

You seem pretty casual about this. Don't they concern you? I've been through hurricanes but never an earthquake! These seem to sneak up on you, at any hour. We know about the hurricanes ahead of time but of course not always tornadoes.

We are from a part of Texas where hurricanes and tornados are a way of life and nothing you can do about them. We feel the same way about the earthquakes here. The old earth is an ever changing place and she has to flex here muscles every now and then. We feel for the people that are injured and lose property to these things but that is about all we can do because we can't change it. I believe that the time was chosen when you were born and the time is chosen when you are going to die. You can't do a thing to change either one.

TerriMarie, As I live in CA we get earthquakes. As long as you build for them and you built on "stable" ground (not landfill or converted wetlands), you can ride most of them out. Of course, if Mother Nature wants to through an 8.1 at you, all bets are off. It is something you just learn to live with (like never putting something heavy over your bed).

When I was in Leon in March I was awakened by the bed shaking. The only reason I knew right away what was happening was that, here in Winston Salem NC a couple years ago we had a series of tremors over a 3 day period. When I lived in Charleston SC there were tremors from time to time although I never experienced them first hand.
The up side is....the volcanos are freakin beautiful!!!! And I'm with MJ....when it's your time.........

Well, another one tonight at 1115 PM .t was only a 5.6 but it has one wondering is it building to the big one.? I spoke to a friend of mine at the USGS and he said the ones we are having could be a blessing in disguise because a lot of energy is being released and may prevent the big one. He also said that this is not an exacting science and no one knows what really my happen

I read that multiple quakes could be a harbinger of an upcoming volcanic eruption.

We come from earthquake, volcanic eruption and hurricane lands, you can protect yourself.

1. be aware of your surroundings at all times. Look for two exits.

2. Don't panic. Let the panic people run out first.

3. Don't necessarily run outside, it can be very unsafe. Watch for falling power lines and other things that are falling.

4. Stay in the most supported place, often the bathroom, under a door or other place with supports the most supports you can find. Watch for falling objects.

5. Keep two weeks of drinking water in your home. This is the first thing people run out of.

6. Keep your passport and money in small bills handy. Know where they are at all times. Keep whatever else you need for survival, like eye glasses in a place where you can get at them easily.

7. Agree on a meeting place with friends or family outside your home so you know where to find people you care about.

8. Remember, looting follows natural disasters. Be prepared. Looters are ugly and brutal.

Last one I experienced was in 2001. 6.8 Nisqually quake. Was in a big store and actually watched a solid concrete slab roll like it was water. Very weird. Tornado's are much worse in my experience. Hurricanes tend to displace nasty snakes with high waters and upsets them greatly and they have attitudes when you find them.
