Animals in Nic.

I am hoping to travel to Nic. sometime before the end of the year. My eventual hope is to relocate there.

As a life-long animal / nature lover I found myself lying awake last night considering the potential everday horrors one may have to overcome in order to live in C.A.

Though I admittedly only spent a few days in Nic. while traveling in C.R. I saw extreme cases of animal disregard in both countries.

In La Fortuna mamed and disfigured street dogs dragged themselves down alleyways and across streets. No one cared. Ditto for dogs in Nic. so infested with mange that they were furless and bleeding from cracked skin....again no one cared.

I know they are relatively poor countries and unfortunately animals are seen as disposable.

Worse yet the Latino machismo B.S. prevents neutering. Thus a perfect storm for the thousands of desperate dogs.

I wonder if there's anyone on here like me? If so has this issue made it difficult to both live there, and face the locals without contempt?

I am now rethinking the notion of taking my dog if I move there. It seems that she would likely be far better off rehomed here, which would allow me to rescue another once there.

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

You have several good points Laperro. We who suffer along just seeing the inhumane status and treatment of animals, especially dogs, in CA have a real problem thinking about living there. I agree with you in that it might just be too big a burden to see all that. However, some of us believe that God hears and answers prayer for animals too. As Martin Luther once said, we should "sin bravely" and looking the other way or avoiding knowing about the problem is not in keeping with our sensitivity. Doing even one small thing to help is what we are called to do in the least. Buena suerte and God bless you.

about taking your dog to another country. as you say, maybe you should find another home for the dog you have. there a few potential problems with taking and animal with you. first is the plane animal storage area. two things are a problen there. one is the people placing an animal are not not animal people, they may place your animal next to a hostile animal and yours may take days to recover from that fright. the other problem is the area is not heated as the cabin is and your only allowed to take your animal while the weather is suitable. one of the problems you might face upon arrival is the place you rent might not be dog friendly. yes, leave your dog home.

Thanks Senormike

Yeah, the flight thing sounds like it would be a nightmare for her.
I might have found her a great home already with a friend who's dog she knows and loves.

Cheers

people who say : cheers are either english or canadian, i think. i have spent the last 2 winters in costambar which is a gated community on the edge of puerto plata and on the beach. search the internet for " costambar.org ". there are lots of canadians that go there for the winter and they are a lot of fun to talk and drink with. you can walk around at night with no fear. the food is great in every restaurant and cooked euro or american or english tasting, you'll love the food. happy hour 4 to 6 , 2 drinks for the price of one, 100 peso's, another 6 to 7 and 3 for 1, 75 peso's and both make them strong. if you are interested in costambar, go to the site and select " vacation rentals ". there are about 30 places, some very expensive and others reasonable. what ever you do, you'll like costambar and you can always go down town to " big lees bar and grill " on the malecon which is road by the beach with several bar/grills with great food and cheaper drinks on some days. i've already reserved plane tickets and rental there for 6 months. in general, the north coast is cheaper than the south coast. costambar is on the beach with a nice breeze, in five months i used the overhead fan maybe 5 times. i can't spell the one place that has an opening, villa something in spanish about olives. right now i think they have a studio which is nice and has a nice breeze. it's over a garage. i've stayed there a couple of times. they change sheets and clean the place every 3 days, i told them it wasn't necessary but they did it anyway. if you book that one you won't regret it. i'll be in costambar 11/19/14. if you like we can talk to each other by email which is a lot easier. my email is michaelbrazell4@gmail.com, love to see you there. i'm not a woman or gay or receive comision from costambar.org, cheers, but i'm an american

No worries Senormike

Good call. I am Canadian. You sound like a fun guy. Are you in Nic? Or ?
Maybe sometime we can sit over drinks and discuss Canadianisms vs. Americanisms. Like Sneakers and Runners (what do you do most in them)....and Eh vs. Huh (which sounds stupider..;)
PS. i dropped out after grade 11 but still scored 3rd year at San Jose State U. Hmmmm When asked I told the U people that I believe that the American Gov't likes to keep people stupid so they don't ask to many questions, but keep flyin' flags. They agreed.
Ever notice that coups and Gov't over-throughers always gather up the educated people and kill them?
The dumb ones don't ask too many questions......
You sound smart though.

Cheers mi amigo

Laperro, Please do not send me anymore private messages. I am an American and probably too F--king stupid to answer them correctly.

No worries. No ill will intended. My Californian roomies and me used to, lightheartedly, discuss such differences all the time. Sometimes they even agreed...with a smile.....as did I when beat.

Cheers

i am in florida at present and will be going to the DR 11/19/14 to spend the winter. i had seriously considered going to nicaland but changed my mind, i like costambar too much. i have much info about nica, took a long time gathering it and will share what i know if your interested. they have nice beach towns, san juan del sur for one, but the moutain towns are much cheaper. don't reserve an apartment before you arrive unless you know someone there who is familar with it and you will probably have to sign a lease.. many cheap hotels in granada a which is a historic and beautiful city which i have never been to. almost got there. i'll this story as short as i can. i was in guatemala 4 years ago, bought a round trip ticket on tica bus to panama, got off the bus in managua, an assistant on the bus told me to go to granada about 1 hour taxi ride. got in a taxi, went to an atm to get local money. most atm's have a button to push for english, this one didn't so i selected the highest number, stood there confused, walked away, got in taxi and on our way. the driver looked at the money i was holding and said you have about $30 which was the trip cost. told him to stop at the next atm where i discovered i didn't have my bank card, must have left it in the machine. told the driver to take me to a cheap hotel. he was pulling up to one but stopped short and said " mi casa zu casa, i gave him the thumbs up and away we went. i spent 2 mights with him and his family who gave up a bed for me. i called a friend in antiqua guatemala who got me in touch with a bank manager in nica, that man handed me $500 just on my friends word, i signed a napkin. that's only the begging of a long story but i'll keep it only to nica. except for this, spent 4 months total in guatemala which i'll never go to again, one month in costa rica and panama both of which are getting too expensive for me. nica fits my budget and i was serious about going there. but if i did it would take too long to get where i have gotten in costambar. i was very lucky when i found that community so i have decided only to go there, cheers buddy

the lease for an apartment for short term is probably not necessary. there's a person called " magicjack " who lives in nica and he is a great source of info. contact him. just be careful about asking questions that have been ask many times before and vary depending on a location. cheers
