Day of the Dead

If you are in Central America around the first week of November you will see the Day of the Dead. It is a distinctly Latino day in which families remember and honor those that have gone before. It is November 2 in Nicaragua, I think. Some places have parades and the churches are very active -- lots of bang bang and boom boom already.

Families gather together to clean and beautify graves. Many spent a night in the cemetery to be close to a loved one. A Central American friend told me it was a special day and night for him and his cousins to honor their grandparents. They specifically enjoyed telling them what had happened in the family during the last year.

Latinos have a very different attitude and belief in death. It is even reflected in their language. One is "esta muerte" not es muerte.

We went past the local cemetery just before sunset and there were lots of people in and around the grounds. Ladies from the country were setting up or had already set up stands to sell flowers. There will be yellow flowers everywhere and lots of other colors too. The cemeteries will be really beautiful.

It is also a time to be careful travelling, Nicas will be trying to get home to family and the Flor de Cana or Victoria Frost will be flowing.
