It seems like the canal construction will proceed on schedule.
Similar to the California gold rush aka, The forty Niners, there will be this new exodus of people coming to seek their fortune from this new project. The largest human project ever attempted in the western world..
Unlike the Panama canal which was wrought with financial fraud, lack of 20th century heavy earth moving equipment. The chinese this time are coming as investors and not as slaves of which many have died due to malaria and other diseases during the construction of the Panama canal. The Panama canal originally started by the French and its abandonment gave the US its opportunity to get rich from it. Many of the financial giants today in the US, e.g. Vanderbuilts, JP Morgan and others made their fortunes from the Panama canal.
President Jimmy Carter decided to give the canal back to its rightful owner. Of course he paid a high price for doing so politically..
The Nicaragua canal was envisioned by the Spaniarchs more than 500 years ago. It was also the first choice of the US until the Panama canal became its opportunity. from the french failure. Today the chinese are sitting on several trillion dollars of US debt bonds. What better way to spend it on a project that will bring prosperity to itself and the region.
Since it may overshadow the Panama canal, there will definitely be ways to try and stall especially using the Monroe Doctrine by the US. That was the case in Spanish Cuba. However Secretary of State John Kerry declared in November 2013 that the "Doctrine" is considered dead. Will the new republican congress reactivate it is anybody guess. I hope not with the entrance of the new players.
