My wife and I will be arriving in Nicaragua mid-February (overland) and would like to know about 1) the road conditions from the Pacific side over to the Atlantic (we know they are "bad" but how bad is bad?) and 2) what is the rental situation in Puerto Cabezas? Are there furnished rentals for $400 or less per month? And if so, how could we go about finding them (we've tried Craigslist and Encuentra24 without luck.)

Post your questions on The Real Nicaragua.
One active poster has worked and lived in Puerto Cabezas for 12 years, another made the drive over there from the Pan Am last year and posted about it.
Either will be pleased to answer your questions.

Do what Key West suggests. Be aware that one of the big problems on the Atlantic Coast is availability of food. It is expensive and not much variety. It depends on what you want. http://the rightsideguide.com has some information. The roads are mostly paved and good is what we have heard, at least in the dry season. Gas is expensive. The distances are farther than it looks on a map.

Email me at netlinkdigital@hotmail.com
and you can use my login info long enough to get your own account. The site administrator posts almost daily. Just send him a PM with your concerns.
It's a pretty mellow site, helpful people.

My wife and I both registered for accounts at TheRealNicaragua and neither of us have heard anything yet. No way to contact the administrator or owner at all.
