Hoping to find someone a little more local to get into more detail about questions related to this move. Anyone near by?

I spend half the year in Tucson, am here now, but leaving end of March for NicaLand. I'll be back end of June, just in time for the heat.
I never get to Phoenix, but was up there three times this last week.
Beautiful weather right now.

We are from Goodyear. My wife owned an office supply company there for 20 years. We live in Atenas, Costa Rica, but are investigating Esteli, Nicaragua in early April, 2016 for a possible relocation Paul Weirather, MD (retired)

My husband and I are from the Phx area but have been living in Hawaii since 2008. Headed back thru Phx., with a few days in Tucson at the end of May on our way to Nicaragua for begin our next adventure! Semi-retired with the plan to teach English, plus husband is a certified personal trainer and counselor.

Small world. I was with the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale for a number of years after retiring from Stanford Medical. A dear friend, Dr. Diane Dimiceli was at the same time, a professor at UofA, there in Tucson, so we went down there frequently. Mostly stayed at Ventana Canyon or LaPaloma. Love both resorts! What do you think of Esteli? We are going for a visit in early April. Costa Rica has gotten very expensive in recent years. Paul

Tucson is nice, everything you need, manageable traffic, not as hot as Phoenix, and since I generally drive, close to Nogales.
I'm moving to a 6 month here, 6 months there, more of a gipsy existence that earlier. Four or five more years, and I'll be in NicaLand full time.
I have all my medical connections here. Nothing wrong with me, but that will change as I age. Humana provides an Medicare Advantage plan here that costs me nothing, and really cheap co-pays. Great doctors here, who cater to an aging population.
It's a model I find comfortable, and I'm surprised that more don't adopt it. It could be done for the cost of an upscale mail service that provides a fixed address, and a Magic Jack phone adapter in Nicaragua.
Tucson has a wealth of quality, reasonably priced rentals during the really hot time of year. Crime is minimal. People are friendly.
I'll probably maintain the connection until they plant me in Nicaragua.

Good to know. I sent you a direct message the other day, don't know if you've seen it. I'm planning a move to nica from phoenix myself, and would really benefit from hearing how you did it. I've seen a couple posts and websites but by far the best way to get a handle on something is by hearing from someone from first hand experience. Please call me 480-521-4858. I appreciate your time

I appreciate the feedback. Started responding to your last message but for some reason it was caught off in mid-post, so not sure how much of it was received.. Anyways, I'm really into the old world colonial style. Wondering what to expect in terms of pricing if I was to buy a home that needed some work, or was already restored. What type of budget would you suggest for living in Nica, housing/food/nightlife, on a monthly basis. Coming from the perspective of someone whose moved there from here I'd really look forward to hearing your thoughts. Thanks again

I can only speak to life in Costa Rica. Nicaragua should be about 40% cheaper pretty much across the board. Housing: we pay $1,600 a month, all inclusive of utilities and well water, but ours is a 5,000 sf. Two story 4 bedroom, 4 bath place on our own mountain with spectacular views. We spend about $700 per month on food and essentials, but my wife and I have a grown daughter and son in law (from Phoenix) living with us as well. As a retired physician, I can afford all this, but would like to save another $1,000 per month, if possible. Thus our considering Esteli, Nicaragua. Our first trip there will be first week in April. I'll try to provide commentary plus pictures of what we find. Buying a house: almost all blogs suggest renting for at least the first year rather than buying. Buying presents it's own dangers anywhere in Central America. Man unscrupulous contractors, real estate agents and lawyers. If a "gringo" is defrauded, it takes many years for the case to even be heard in the courts. Napoleanic law is a lot different from American or Canadian law as well. Do it yourself projects, including house repair is very challenging in Central America. Case in point: my Jacuzzi brand hot tub has access panels opened with a special configeration screwdriver that isn't phillips, slot end, hex, or torx. I had to get one from the US before I could press a simple reset button inside. Took 2 months. A lot of things like that down here. Brought my massive, 50 lb tool box as a checked luggage piece. So glad I did. Hand tools are crap here. Rejects made in China not good enough to sell in North America.

Key west pirate. I lived there for 2 years. Loved it but needed new horizons. Relocate to Granada later this year. Love the place and looking forward to getting back to nicoland. A former pirate myself
