Anyone here married to a Nicaraguan and gained residency (or citizenship) as a spouse? I'm curious about the hoops to be jumped through.

Same whoops as any other visa, except you get a wife to support, and probably an extended family, too.

The folk wisdom is that those who marry for money, earn it. I suspect that applies to those who marry for visas, too, but I'm not prepared to do the field research needed to prove the point.

Wow, I didn't think the question would be taken that way. Just to clarify, We've been married 10 years and have I have another 5 before retirement. I was just curious if the path to residency was different as a spouse than as a retiree. I think the 'perks' of retiree status would make that the path I end up taking.

Your usual stuff-proof of income, police report, health report seem to be the same for any visa. I had a friend who got the marriage visa who complained it was all the same stuff as a jubilado.
Since you are already married, you will need certified copy of marriage license.
For those not yet married, your lawyer will type up a statement that you are not married. If you or the soon -to-be spouse have been divorced or widowed, you will need certified copies of these.
I got a retiree visa before we were married. I have thought about switching next time that renewal comes up. I believe with a marriage visa you can legally work here, which doesn't apply to me. Most likely I will keep the jubilado visa as I may bring a car down. I don't know the details of what types of goodies (car, household, firearms) a returning Nica can bring back, I believe it depends on how long they were gone.
You have time to sort these things out, plus they change.
When it gets closer to the time, have a detail-oriented native speaker search migracion's website and then go to migracion and talk to a live body. A good lawyer may be in order.
My wife's 4 siblings had the sense to vote with their feet years ago. They are spending a lot of time sorting out their paperwork (typo on original birth certificate, US and Nic. names do not exactly match, one went CR illegally and had no passport so she needed a special permission from Nic to return to her own country to straighten things out, etc.).
Sorry if we et a litle testy at times. A lot of the people thinking about moving here are deadbeats or dreamers without any basis in reality.

And the rest are suspect nutcases, like me for example.
You have to enjoy a lot of aggravation in your life. I suspect, but don't know for a fact, that being married to a Nica girl helps in this department.
