Hi Tim. I have a love for pit bulls. I have a mixed right now. Because of their strength loving loyalty and tenacity, You must find the right breeder. A misunderstood breed that bad breeders and bad men have almost ruined. I also like dobermans. Intelligent, family protective and with their short hair. Adaptable to hot climates. I do not know much about rottweilers. Hear they might be a good choice. German Shepherds are a gimmy. Breed for the job you are talking about. The only problem is their coat. I believe they have a problem with tropical heat. The contradictions are that I have seen them here. And that they are used in the middle east. Good luck!

Well, dogs don't sweat so the heavier coat might be an advantage in keeping the ambient heat from their bodies.

Pigs don't sweat either.

I just put a machete into the back of a pit bull yesterday afternoon. I came back from a chore and found him trying to get into my chicken pen.

This particular dog has a rep for eating chickens. I lost two of a previous batch that I allowed to range, probably to him. He was seen grabbing a chicken from one of my neighbors and running with it.

I felt the machete strike bone so he's going to be one sore puppy for a couple of weeks. I doubt that he will come back,,, but if he does,, I won't be so generous next time.

I agree, it's not the breed, 100%, it's how the dog is raised as well. The majority of the campo dogs are skinny and hungry all the time but know not to bother the chickens.

I'd really like to bring down a breeder pair of these:

These supposedly don't have the hip problems that have been bred into US German Shepherds

Guard dogs need to be specially trained to be truely effective. They must not be "friendly" with people per se. They must not eat food from just anyone, only their care takers. Foods can be druged and tossed to the to disable them. "Watch dogs" may sound an alarm but are usually too friendly to most people to be deturants. Ask a local K9 unit or veteranarian for information about a good trainer. HTH
