Any information about the Solentiname Islands near San Carlos would be helpful. I will be visiting December 17th. Has anyone built on an Island in lake Nicaragua?
Thanks

You would do well to look on Trip Advisor or the Lonely Planet forum for advice on the Solentiname islands...plenty on there.
Note that the ferry from Granada to san Carlos is not operating so you will have to take the road or fly...busses serve San Carlos from MGA...about 6 hours trip.
There are many houses on the isletas...at least two hotels. Several isletas currently for sale.

I was therein September. What makes them unique is they are hard to get to, isolated, and underdeveloped. I think building on those islands runs against the current of what makes them so special.

To Clarify...in my previous post I said there were buildings on Lake islands...i meant the Isletas around Granada, not Solentiname. I doubt you would get permit to build there anyway.

There are homes on some of the islands.
Supposedly cannot be owned by foreigners, but before ATZ jumps me,, let me say , I've only heard that, don't know it for a fact.
I've seen them for sale before,, maybe Encuentra 24.

Deborah Goehring writes a blog and lives on Ometepe Island with her husband. They have traveled to the Solentiname Islands and she posted about it here: https://retirenicaragua.wordpress.com/2015/03/04/the-small-fly-on-the-solentiname-islands/
I would suggest reading this piece, and others about their life on Ometepe, and then, as Iguanalover suggested, visit for yourself.

There are indeed homes on the Solentinames....even a small lodge or two. Likely some restrictions for everybody, not just foreigners. On the Granada isletas...ownership is as normal in Nicaragua.

Land within so many miles of the border cannot be owned by foreigners. We were told it is fifteen miles, but you need to check.

Thanks to everyone for the great responses. I read the blog, very good information.
I am using the law firm Garcia and Bodan to research the sale. Has anyone used them before?

Yes I used them to transfer money from the U.S. for the purchase of a large property. Very efficient. I did use a different attorney for all of my research, documents and transfer of title, actually 2 different attorneys and they saved me a lot of heartache and financial loss on 2 properties, prior to my final selection. Fortunately for myself, I stumbled upon helpful and honest attorneys in Nicaragua.
