My husband & I are planning to move to Nicaragua asap. We have done tons of research but cannot find where we file our residency paperwork. Is that done in the U.S., online, or do we have to wait until we are physically in Nicaragua?
Thank you for your help :-)

There be tons of info on here and other places about this. You file da papers here wid immigration in Managua. Have to bring info that you get in country you be cummin from....birth cert, proof of income, medical cert, police record check, Need translations of dis and certification that they be authentic. Den, you writes a letter and take a pitcher and go to migration and fill out a form and you be a resident...maybe.

This is a dead end process. I made the mistake of hiring an attorney which claims you will get your residency 100%. Cost me $1500 and all I did was get a run around. I had all the papers , police report, letter from doctor is Usa , INTERPOL' police report, Virginia police report, and the process took over 10 months. I have given up on the process it's a freaking nightmare . YOU CANNOT TRUST ANYONE IN THAT COUNTRY.

Try the Nicaraguan Embassy in your state. They may be able to initiate things if not obtain the residency. We had their help in FL and things went smoothly.

Going through the process isn't that bad, but can be intimidating at first glance. And anyone who charges $1,500 is already giving you the shaft.
There is a good guide to getting residency in Nicaragua: http://nicaconexiones.com/this-is-how-you-get-nicaraguan-residency/
Highly recommended.

I own a business in Nicaragua and employ 8 People and have lived there for 4.5 years. All my paperwork had the I's dotted and T's crossed. I had my interview and still I have not received anything. I own a condo as well there and have done everything possible to obtain residency. I recommend not going through the painful experience of the residency. I have learned this about Nicaragua since living here since 2011. Number 1 the country is corrupt.... Really Corrupt . You cannot trust a sole in that country as well as any lawyer as I had a one referred to me from a good friend in Managua , you cannot trust lawyers. Police , judges,, immigration to say the least. However I continue to live here because I want to help people and my company pays three times minimum wage in the country for 8 families. That's a good feeling however Ortega and the govt is complete fraud and so if your willing and able to deal with all the crap that goes on in the country come and do as you like however nothing compares to the USA . I sometimes wonder why I won't return but it's the satisfaction of making lives better being employed by my company. There's nothing more satisfying then seeing you change the lives of a families in the Second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Good luck with the residency process as it's a nightmare. Just easier for me to give my contact at immigration my passport for a 90 days visa. I've been doing it for years and don't plan on changing , cost me $40 every 6 months Well worth it

Hi,
Thank you for your response & information. We may start with the 90 day Visa & go from there. Where do you apply for that? We live in Denver so consulates are flights away. We will go if we need to but if it is possible to avoid the cost of a flight we'd love to save the money.

Hi,
We don't have a Nicaragua consolate in our state so we would have to fly to one. Before we book travel to visit a consulate we want to make sure that is required. Is it required to bring paperwork in person or can it be sent as a complete package?
I'm sorry to ask here but I tried calling them today & the recording was only in Spanish & could not get a person to speak to.
Thank you for your information, it is very helpful.

I recommend not speaking the way the idiot critizing my post. You obviously are an idiot and cannot read or write. Get a life and for you to mention about staying in Nicaragua for woman is a joke bud. I have two beautiful little girls that were born in Nicaragua and I'm not running from anyone in the states to answer your question. Stick to the facts about residency buddy. A few people have written good responses. Go with it I'm just sharing what I went through and as anyone knows nothing is easy in Nicaragua. It's all a long long process and if someone has better information than me than great I'm just finished with the process and have given up sonic you fall into the same trap then you will understand where I came from. Good luck and I hope your successful

You absolutely do not have to go to a counselate in the states (and if you did it still would need to be done here)....but if you are coming down on the trip and not planning to return before you move....that seems a bit dangerous to me if you have not been here before.......you need to bring down all the paperwork as noted on here. Also a poster has said he would help you and he got his own residency.....so he knows what is needed and in what form so i would surely ask him to confirm.....you have you be here for the process so just bring it all down...you are not sending a "package" anyplace. BYW there is a ton of info on here about this,,.just search under Nicaragua Residency..also somebody posted da specific link to a site that has it all down.

All paperwork has a limited time factor. Get it as late as possible before you leave and process it as quick as possible when you arrive. Many have recommended Patri cia Sanchez, I haven't used her, but she may be able to email you a list of items you will need. Paper work is king here! Always ask what the fee's are before you hire anyone, no matter who they are. You might want to obtain more than one quote also. HTH

You get a 90 day tourist visa when you get off the plane down here…..no need for anything but a PP and 10 bucks…
Forget the consulate….that is nonsense…
Cross check all the info you get on here as a lot of junk…like that,
If you are coming down first to look about and will not start residency then...wait on the paperwork until toy atr ready as some stuff is good for only 30 days from getting to filing..like the police report as I recall.....may be 90...been a while
I suggest you get somebody to help you...you seem at ground zero and if you stumble around too much on this it will turn out badly

Greetings ALL!
I am very much looking forward to moving with my family to Nicaragua in the summer of 2017 and have been following these conversations for months.
I have lived in wonderful places like St. Gallen, Switzerland for a couple of years, and also sadly challenged internally, but so very beautiful Port-au-Prince, Haiti for 3 to 4 years (in addition to many others, like Khatmandu, Nepal, and so on).
My younger brother was born in Dhaka, Bangladesh-Pakistan so I was lucky enough to learn and speak Bengali prior to English. Hmmm... cannot remember a word. ??
I am well aware that when relocating or simply visiting as an American, or other worldwide citizen there are a myriad of obstacles - yet a sense of peace, frustration and corruption - yet unadulterated beauty, fascination and incredible people.
Acclimation to a new culture, anywhere in the world takes some great amount of adjustment. It takes patience, a completely open mind, and a inquisitive attitude regarding new foods, etc.., and there will be good and bad people, good and bad days anywhere and everywhere in the world.
I always found it easier to acclimate to a foreign country and culture than to make the return to the States adjustment.
Rather than continue to bludgeon all of you with a novel, I would like to simply THANK ALL on this thread that have generously shared their time and knowledge with us newbies. Invaluable stuff people!
I also enjoy the occasional banter or disagreement, but I guess my thought is... aren't we all here to help and assist as a collective support system for a better life, greater knowledge, and potential friendships? Some I know that will last a lifetime.
Is there anyone that is in charge or occasionally monitoring this share? I will preface this with.... I am not selecting or pointing out any individual(s), but does any one, or any group not have the position to ask continuing abusers to vacate the post?
I absolutely do NOT offend easily and am not at all upset in any way. Don't believe in it. ??. I am am also not one to be pushed away from what I feel to be an awesome resource for like-minded persons to meet, help and befriend.
I simply have recently noticed quite an anger and hatred reflected in postings from a select few. I do not pretend to know the underlying cause(s), but I do sincerely hope that all will take a breath before posting anything that may scare away new people from the choice of a happy life in Nicaragua. Individuals that might in time become a great friend, ally, or asset to our expat community and/or Nicaragua herself.
Hoping All are having a wonderful and HAPPY holiday season. Blessed Be....Christine

I used the attorney Paul Tiffer who many recommend. He is on Facebook. He is well versed in all types of residency. Different paperwork is needed for each type. For retiree you need a birth certificate, Dr letter saying you are in good health with no communicable diseases, a police report and proof of income. These must all be apostled if you live in the US. First you must get them notorized, then they will apostle them at your state government. Look it up on line to see where it should go in your state. You can use copies. Income letters from Soc SEc may not be accepted by the notory so you write a letter swearing that the info is true and get that notorized. You will also need the names of 3 Nicaraguans that will vouch for you. Mr. Tiffer took all of this and 5 months later we got a call to come and get our card. Keep in mind, the apostled info is only good for 6 months.

I think translated first, so the notary and apostile is on the translated documents. Government documents like the police report do not have to be apostiled, but i did anyway as some reviewers in immigration don't seem to know that so better to be safe.

Here's the deal. The reason this site is valuable is because much of the information is good (correct, or close to it)..therefore it is useful. Here I mean facts, not opinion on which there is not necessarily a "correct" and "incorrect". So when I see some really bad facts on here...not a divergence of opinion...but incorrect facts that I am sure are not right by my own experience not the second hand version of what someone else said, etc., I correct that. Some of the people who are called to task for posting bad stuff...things that could cause real problems if listened to...... respond with insults because they do not like it that they are challenged. And then they get taken down. As it happens most of them cast some exceedingly typical insults so it is good for them to deal with a response. Not called to task, they litter the site with garbage which is worse than the call out. Many just feel the need to post to show up so to speak...even when they have no idea. The beauty of a forum like this is that if you see that just do not read it. Now we know what a world traveler you are, so hopefully we will be spared that in your future posts..I realize it is your need to tell, but really much more than our need to know,

There are many lawyers like Mr. Tiffer and people who aren't lawyers but just know the ins and outs like Mrs. Patricia Sanchez who are available. The problem is that they charge an arm an a leg and you still have to do all of the difficult paperwork yourself.
The process isn't difficult. You go to the immigration office (or the INTUR office for retiree residency) and ask them what you need. They give you sheet with all the requirements. You get those required papers and then turn them in. A few months later you get your residency card.
ANYONE can do it themselves with a little patience and determination. I would recommend anyone, regardless of deciding to do it themselves or to hire a lawyer, to at least do themselves the favor of investigating the process.
Even business owners aren't allowed to leave and enter the country on visa runs forever.

Good advice...as he says, even if you hire it out, good to know what it is all about as you do it. If you do not speak Spanish at all or very poorly...take someone to interpret with you. Plenty of those around for very little money. As you will see if you do it...the time outside of what you have to do yourself anyway is about 2-3 hours..exclusive of travel to and from MGA. The biggest thing is to make sure you have all the paperwork you need and they flat out tell you that...and it is on here as well.

We can all learn from Duckshel:
1) rent for 2 to 5 years to see if you like it here.
2) Do not sympathize with poor people, it leads now where good. The more you pay your poor people the sooner they save up for the coyote and dump you, which will increase your depression.
3) Residency is a slow annoying process. Do it right by their standards and you will eventually get it. Since you are a busy person and everybody online says go to Tiffer, you might want to go to Tiffer. Mere pensionados can play the Intur game, but again in the end you do what migracion wants in the form Migracion wants it if you plan to succeed.
4) Our value to Nic. is greatly exaggerated in our own minds. They have Jesus, socialism, foreign aid, and remittances on their side. We are just an egocentric sideshow.

I did not have my documents translated prior to notory and apostle. I don't think a notary would sign something in another language. There is not problem having them translated after they are apostled.

could be...in any case, a notary does not attest to the document contents just to the fact that you are the person who signed the document....so i guess you could have it done either way..I brought all mine down at one time so was all done...second time all my stuff was from Nica so not translation done except for my "letter of why i want to be here". BYW...across from immigration their is a row of kiosks with lawyers to do all kinds of things that you may need done at the last minute for immigration.....like the afore mentioned letter..and they notorize and take pics too.

A US notary just signs that they saw your ID and saw you sign.
Since I did it they have changed the law about the translation on the Nic end, something about an "official" translation. Pooh, the days of DIY translations have gone away!
Maybe somebody can post how you gets them now in Nic.

You get the 90-day visa automatically stamped in your passport when you arrive at the airport. No need to deal with consulates/embassies beforehand. If you plan to ship household goods once you have your residency, use a lawyer who can handle that part for you as well as the residency application. If not, a facilitator such as Patricia Sanchez will be all you need--she is very experienced and successful at what she does. Or you can go the do-it-yourself route following the instructions in the aforementioned book.

Just noticed that no-one on this thread mentioned that you will be interviewed sometime during the process. They typically come to your home and will talk to your neighbors to find out if you're a straight-up person. One day at Spanish school a couple showed up who also study with my Spanish teacher, with their interviewer in tow. They asked the teacher to talk with the interviewer about them. The interview takes place towards the end of the process and usually results in being summoned to receive the cedula soon afterwards. The process is presently taking about 5-6 months for a pensionado visa (for which the paperwork is first submitted to INTUR, then to Migracion after INTUR approves it).

Contact Paul Tiffer and he will tell you everything you need to do in detail. I used him and followed his instructions and everything went according to how he said it would. I dropped of everything he told me to bring to his office in Managua, paid him $400 and he called me in about 2 months and I met him at immigration in Managua, paid him another $400 and picked up my residency card. He speaks English.

Yeah, and $800 is about the lower end of the scale for professional help on this...you can do yourself, but if you have the $$ this is well worth it...save your patience for something else. On another note related to this....for the import of you HH goods you need a good customs agent, not a lawyer. Very important.

Make sure that information you get on residency is from somebody who has residency. I have my cedula. Used Patricia. Took 3 months. Brought in my car. Took 3 months of hell. Have household goods and tools. Do not want to go through the same experience. Told that there are ways to make it easier. Have to do my homework. Most likely will sell. A lot of tools I was going to use to train kids than donate.

@Nica2017: Maybe it was asked before and I did not read it BUT, why would you consider moving to another country that you have never been to? Your decision to come first as a tourist is wise. Nixa is a wonderful place for some people, hell for others. Even within Nica, you will find areas that will not appeal to you while other areas are paradise. You need to experience the country before you fully commit. Good luck and this forum is a wonderful place for both entertainment as well as useful information. Safe travels.

Glock you described all of the world. Paradise is subjective. I built a home in a predominantly nica resort area. A lot f hell in the building. A lot of learning experience in the process. I live in a resort area that is next to a fishing village near a casino that rivals a USA resort. My home is incredible. Not large. Not a mansion just a ocean view and a confort level that cannot be duplicated . You can make it whar you want and accept it's drawbacks. For me I have more choices here.

I live in a resort area that is next to a fishing village near a casino that rivals a USA resort. My home is incredible. Not large. Not a mansion just a ocean view and a confort level that cannot be duplicated . You can make it whar you want and accept it's drawbacks. For me I have more choices here.

hello prpcof, Where you describe sounds wonderful. We are planning to retire to Nicaragua anad were thinking of where and should we buy built or build. A fishing village next to a casino in a resort area sounds intriguing and very modern and up to date. We didn't know there was such a thing outside certain developments in Nicaragua. Would you share the locale with us and it might be nice for others planning to move as well. Since this site is for sharing and learning about the country and where to be, you would do all a great fvaour. And i am very interested in the comfort level besides the ocean view. Thank you most kindly for your response. Have a good holiday.

Ask people to name modern and up-to-date world destinations, and Nicaragua would spring from few lips. And rightfully so. Its' quirky primitiveness (compared to Costa Rica) seems actually to be a big draw to many ex-pat fans of the place. It's generally no place for sticklers, though, and those who like it all just-so often don't like it.
