For how many days is a tourist visa valid
Do you have to leave the county to renew?
How stringent is the enforcement?

It's good for 90 days. Last time I renewed the visa without leaving Nicaragua it took nearly all day. I've never overstayed a visa here, so I don't know how big the fines are or how many appendages are subject to removal per violation. It's really a generous visa program compared to many, which leaves me wondering why so many go to so much expense, trouble, stress and time getting longer-term visas. Limited tax advantages on imported household goods are the only reason I'm aware of, or folks arriving in large boats.

90 days on entry and renewing is very easy. They are getting sticky about in renewing in-country at the immigration office, it is best to leave the country. If you fly out, any country will do as everyone gets stamped in and out (we have done in with Guatemala, no questions asked) but if you go overland, Costa Rica, Belize or Mexico are your choices.
It is best not to stay over, at the airport you get a fine, I think it is 50 cords a day but overland, they can really hassle you. There are border fees going overland and one coming into the airport. Nicaragua is an easy country, it is best to follow the rules. We use Nicaragua as a home base and travel mucho. We have never had a problem. All the Central American countries are pretty much the same, no country is going to change unless the other countries do. People like us bring in many dollars, cause no problems so we are betting on the money. If you cause a problem, they might not be as friendly.
