Hi All! We are considering moving to Nicaragua and are visiting in February to see if it's a good fit for us. We have done a lot of research and were drawn to Granada but feel it might be a bit big and touristy for us and hoping to get some suggestions of cities to check out.
We don't have children so no needs or concerns regarding children. Our biggest concern anywhere we live is safety which probably translates to a small to medium city or suburban area with little tourist traffic and hopefully some expats as well. If we make the move we are hoping to keep costs low (rent for a 2 or 3 bedroom house or apartment around $800/month - less would be great).
We would also be working remotely so we would need stable internet connection. Long term we are planning on possibly purchasing property as an investment. Another goal we hope to achieve is to contribute to the community in some way through charity work, whether that means working directly or indirectly with low income Nicaragua native folks.
One last thing, we currently live in Colorado and love the mountain terrain but would also love living near the beach, we're open to anything. The only preference we have regarding climate is maybe an area that doesn't have the most critters and bugs in the country and highest humidity. We know we can't avoid all together though.
Any suggestions?

Altitude is your ally and mountains are your friends when it comes to avoiding bugs in the subtropics. You'll be in the right area when hotel rooms come with blankets on the bed, and you may still find creatures from Japanese sci-fi flicks in the shower. Coffee country provincial capital Matagalpa might be up your alley, but gringos are thin on the ground. I can think of no towns close to the beach you can reasonably expect to be insect-free. Internet reception quality can vary block-by-block everywhere.

Thank you for your feedback!
Where do you live? Are you familiar with the Granada area? Maybe the answer for us is a bit away from the Granada city center (to avoid the crime concern). We've read if we aren't right up against Lake Nicaragua the bugs aren't as thick. What do you think?

Best places to live in Granada are not close to the lake...not just the bugs but the general neighborhood. Not much crime in the center or elsewhere in Granada. But getting out of the center..say 2-3 blocks away from the center square away from lake is also queiter and calmer.

Whatever else you may say about Granada, which is at or near sea level and only 1300-some miles north of the equator, it is not cool or bug-free. It does have lots of Canadian and North American ex-pats. You need to just visit and look around this small country before choosing where to settle. Remember, even bus travel will take you from north border to south border in 12 hours or so -- east to west is slower. If you really want cooler weather without bugs, your choice means mountains and most of the mountain towns are in the north. Matagalpa is the biggest of those.
