We fought to get rid of a brutal dictactorship and now were going back to one, says former compatriot. http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2017/01/daniel-ortega-president-170111082241269.html

Your screen name bespeaks your mindset. As a resident guest in this fine country, I find it appalling that you would use this forum to promote dissent. Yankee Go Home!

DumLuk speaks the truth.
It's sad, but we are enjoying a window of tranquility and prosperity.
This is a Nicaraguan problem,, not an expat problem. Unless Nicaragua goes south, like Venezuela, there will be little apparent change for us.
This is an expat forum,, I suppose we are entitled to discuss how we feel about Nicaragua. I am careful not to go down this road with Nicaraguans, however. For one thing,, there are ears everywhere, like Cuba and Venezuela. For another,, it's not our business, and they are more cognizant of what is happening than we give them credit for..
For the moment the US is ignoring Nicaragua,, working with Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador, and there is some progress there.

I agree with Key West Pirate and hopefully any problems will not affect the ex-pat community already in place and those of us planning to be there. I think it bests not to voice too many opinions. Italy in the 70s was another thing and as a university student one could be vocal even as an ex-pat! this is different. Let's hope nothing changes except for the better and better as some members have optimistically voiced.

Maybe while Trump is bringing jobs back to America you could ask him if he could find you both some left over Iran-Contra money to buy you both tickets out of here.

I'm struggling to understand the connection between Trump bringing back jobs,, Iran Contra,, and money for plane tickets out of Nicaragua.
I believe most of us have the resources to buy our own tickets.
There was a woman who used to post on NicaLiving,, originally retired to Venezuela, left for Nicaragua about two years ago, Matagalpa as I remember.
She described it as very nasty then. It's gotten much worse.
Mr Ortega is a fox who is very aware of which side is bread is buttered. Communist, Socialist, Capitalist, he's worn quite a few hats over the last forty years.
In many ways DO is like Mr Trump,, a businessman who takes the best deal offered him.
Nicaragua is on a much more solid footing than Venezuela. For one thing,, they grow their own food and have a few things (like coffee) to export. Things are getting steadily better here in Nicaragua.

KWP...is this the first time you have struggled to understand the writings on here? The Rosetta Stone to it is to understand that most on here cannot get much right, let alone string two thoughts together in the same day. So they write from a necrotic hippocampus and blame it on GMOs.

I do not live here yet- so i find your comment to me not of the best intentions. Mine was a wish for all who are here and those of us who would like to move here to have a good life and no trouble! Thank you for your comment to me Mr. Chip

Feliceb, I did not see anyone respond to you, so why the paranoid defense? My comments have been directed to Dum and dumber, the Pirate, who came on here bashing and name calling the president of Nicragaua. I find it appaling as guests in this wonderful country I by choice reside in, that they would use this forum to that purpose. And for clarity, I also referred to Trump's famed call to "bring back to America..." for those two to hop on his bandwagon and go home. They truely are what has been historicaly called "The Ugly American".

Feiceb, as to your concern as to the safety of an investment here, I would not worry. Nicaraguans have lived through and won 3 US sponsored wars in a generation and they are very happy to keep their well earned peace. I would not rush into anything, keep good legal counsel, and the originals of all your paperwork, from medical, residency and legal: No one here seems to keep records well. With a government that has the highest aproval rating in the world, outside of a few long standing regional protests, there is very little to show any change on the horizon outside of the constant growth we have seen. Democratic Socialism works well in a small nation better than big nation systems with vast diversity and resources. (and that is where any criticism of Nicaragua is coming from).
