Hello, I'm planning on moving to Nicaragua for about 3-4 months to study Spanish full-time. Could you please recommend a city that has good Spanish schools and preferably gyms around so I can exercise every so often? I have a cheap to moderate budget. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you, Jen

Gyms are pretty common in Nicaragua. But good Spanish schools seem pretty scarce, at least when judged by the number of their students who learn to speak the language.

San Juan Del Sur has a Spanish school (Spanish Ya) that teaches the curriculum for the D.E.L.E. exams that students take to demonstrate their level of proficiency in Spanish as part of college entrance applications or in applying for jobs that require such proof. They also administer the exams several times a year. In order to be qualified to do this their teachers are highly trained and regularly attend courses to acquire and maintain/improve their competence. By contrast, there are Spanish schools where the teachers are poorly trained, some of whom are college students trying to support themselves through school with little to no training in how to teach Spanish as a second language. Many of them speak poorly articulated "street Spanish" full of grammatical and pronunciation errors which is hard for a beginner to understand and rely heavily on handouts. I have chosen this school over several in Granada because of this, and because I love being by the ocean. All lessons are one-on-one unless couples choose to study together. They are not the cheapest, but for my money they are the best.

Granada has 27 schools...some great and some not. A good idea is to use one school and then after a month or so switch to another one for a month......do class work first (small classes) and then last month do one on one. Find one that specilizes in teaching English people spanish, not Spanish Speakers English as is many times the case. Big difference in how well it works.

Esteli is known for its language schools. There is one that is also a popular hostel in center of town. Also many gyms including a new state of the art one next to the multicentro.

Thank you so much for your help. It is VERY helpful. I've been through a bunch of Spanish schools and teachers in the past and I am very picky when it comes to teachers so I don't mind shelling out a few extra bucks for a good class. I'll definitely keep your advice in mind. Thank you again, Jen
