Hello to all. I want to apologize to anyone I've offended somehow. I'm French Canadian from Montréal. Going to Nica next week for a Reconnaissance tour and then going back to live there. I do know the culture and speak the language fluently, but thought I would check the expats for some feedback. I didn't realize this site is exclusively American. The cultural difference between my culture and the American culture seems wider than it is with Nicas. Up here we are very open and rather transparent. A little discussion is fun sometimes. Again, sorry if I offended anyone, it was definitely not my intention.

Miss P, I think your appology was unnecessary. Most responders were/are not very receptive, they are thin skined wana be intelectuals that just need to appear knowledgeable. Most do what they condemn in others and are too selfrighteous to see themselves for the hypocrits they are.
Keep posting and welcome to Nica, just ignore the bullies, they just like to goad people, it's the only importance in life they seem to have.

This site certainly seems very U.S. oriented at times. I'm Canadian and definitely have to take some posts with a large grain of salt! There is good information here at times, but I've found the various expat pages on Facebook to be overall less snarky and more helpful. There is an expats in Nicaragua page, and several for different specific locations. San Juan Del Sur, where I live, has about four or five alone.
Please don't apologize--if anything, you are owed an apology by those who didn't have the manners to treat you more respectfully.

@miss: There is no need to post an apology. You have you opinions and that is your right. I agree with RickT in that many are thin skinned. I think everyone should do as they want to live, however, do so in a way that allows other to also live how they want to live. My biggest offense seemed to be the gross generalization of people whom live in a gate community. Nuff said.
Please continue to post as this site is very helpful.

Some websites seem to need a reminder of
"Be nice, even if it hurts".
Un moderated websites tend to get rank with time as the nasty people chase away the others.
Sadly, a commercial site like this makes its money from ads whether there is good info here or bad, whether the people are educados o pleitistas.
We need to police ourselves a little to keep it on an even keel.

Apology Accepted, and even if some want to be pollyannas or 'police' the site', her 'comments made over the past couple weeks on multiple message sites have been agrressive and 'know it all' insulting to some expats and the Nicaraguan people.. She has not even said she ever be has even been here but sure tells us how she 'knows it all', All her 'information' seems to come from her "Somozanian' expat friends. Even in her apology she divides Canadian expats from US people. Her comments came not as friendly inquiries but riding in on her moose-broom-stick making accusations against expats and telling people how they should behave. So here I repost my original criticism and stand by it as being fair, not bullying, and apropriate.
(I thank you MissyP for the apology and do think the apology is apropriate and my comment reposted below when first published received many private messages in support.)
MissP enjoy your exploratory visit and I sincerely hope you find the place in OZ you are looking for.
MissyP, Rare is it I would write in defense of someone, but ATZ has made a point worth expanding on about you and your campaign to challenge the expat community in Nicaragua. You, in the past week or so 'appear on stage' spouting your proported understanding, need to preserve and share in your big dreams. All we know about you is 1. You claim to be an 'old woman'. 2. You do not live here, and don't claim to have ever even been here. 3. admit you had a child by sleeping with a Nica man. 4. You are friends with expat Nica's in the US. 5. You call them "true political refugees". From a Nica point of view they are the cowards who ran off with the money when the people acted for change as part of the Bolivar revolution in the Americas.. They are no heroes. 6. You come on here shouting from your gringo bandwagon as to 'how an expat should behave'. Most expats are those who chose to live with a people in a socialist democracy by choice, living with the knowlege we are the guests in a country where there was fought 3 US sponsored wars, won by our neighbors here, not your 'friends', who are now at peace. They are not your group of 'expat Nica' friends; the cowards who grabbed their money and left the people of this country at "political risk", and ran when the going got tough ,abandoning their people and culture; "Cowards and Traitors." Nicaragua now enjoys the lowest crime and murder rate in the hemisphere, little to no gangs or drug trafficing, safe and secure borders, and an 87% presidential approval rating, highest in the free world", a lot more than its neighbors or the US and your cowardly friends can claim. Yet you claim to know things about how life is, should be, and how an expat should think and behave? You are one 'old hat trick' we don't need here. There are enough nutty expats, not ruining anything here, they have no real infuence on anything, but at times embarassing me and others who live here with respect and at peace. The US embassy has told me there are only a few thousands US/Nica residents here anyway. Besides your profoud lack of 'reality', your biggest offending atttude is that you 'tell people how to 'behave'. That is as "Ugly American" as you can get. "Yankee Go Home"!

Much of the new car, home construction, buisiness plants,are coming from the growing middle class and new bank opporunities, not 'hidden cash'. The US for decades has put pressure on international banks not to do loans to Nicaragua. This has loosened up with many Latin banks finding Nicaragua a safe bet, so loans are flowing and at decent rates. bank loans not 'hidden cash The US again a few months ago passed Congressional legislation condemning and restricting loans to Nicaragua. This was led by that Cuban/Amercan woman US Cogresswoman from Florida in direct retaliation for Nicaragaua's position on the Cuban refugee crisis. Fortunately enough Latin banks and finance groups are ignoring the continuted US opression of Nicragua for having won the 3 wars the US sponsored here.

How about reading the posts she wrote and seeing how mean she is...mean spirited and arrogant. There is nothing wrong with calling those people out...might even help them. She does not need to apologize to me...I don't want anything to do with her.

I am sorry English, but this lady came into the forum and NEVER asked a qeustion or for advise. (Read her postings) not once. Instead came on here lecturing expats as how to behave. Ask my advise, I will give it, Tell me how to behave, go to hell.

The Lady clearly did not intend to "give you advice or tell you what to do".. she made that clear when she wrote an apology to anyone, including you, who might have been "offended".
I was not offended, I believed that I understood that she intended to say and that she meant no harm, therefore I extended - to her - MY PERSONAL hand of understanding and told her that "no apology was necessary" to me or for me.
I did not "speak' for you. I would not presume to speak for you.
Clearly your style is quite different from mine. I am 78 years old and likely that accounts for the "difference".
My reassurance to the Lady who posted stands as stated. FOR ME. and "no apology is necessary to me,
I believe that I understand her posting. I am NOT "offended".

I'm an American and have been reading the Costa Rica sight in the past but no longer due to the immature nasty exchanges on the sight the regulars direct toward each other and also insult regularly innocent inquirers such as yourself. These same posters ave also infected this Nicaragua sight. There are superior sights for both countries that do not tolerate the abuse u suffered. I'd list them here but wish to not enlighten the regulars here.

I'm noticing that whenever a place is nice and inexpensive, expats and tourists flock over and everything becomes way more expensive. Costa Rica, Belize, Panama, and Croatia are good examples of this.
I live on a small pension and chose Nicaragua mostly because of the low prices. It really saddens me that Americans and Canadians are starting to build extravagant housing communities. San Juan del Sur is now inaccessible for me (and most Nicaraguenses). Let's not spoil this rare not-so-well kept secret that is Nicaragua.

But others have the right to offer their views to that as well...on a good forum it is a responsibility to respond to nonsense...but some think not. BTW, Québec is French and borderline socialist, as am I. No need to explain Somoziste Refugees' (they did come over as refugees) right-wing beliefs. That was a reason I separated from my ex. The elders in his family were mostly right-wing corrupt people. Their children and grandchildren established in Québec are now very moderate. Those who moved to Miami and Texas are Republicans. Oh, and I was married, so to say 'I slept with a Nica man and had a child' is judgemental, to say the least.

Actually another bad assumption on your part...i believe your case is the only thing we have agreed on in 20 or so exchanges. So, why even bring this up again at this point after getting decent advice on the car stuff.....is that all to dull and agreeable for you...so you want to start a new round of conflict to keep you old and rapidly deteriorating mind (such as it may be) in gear. go someplace else with that nonsense.
